Darby, 101, of Gaithersburg, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, at Wilson Health Care Center, Gaithersburg. She was the wife of Lawrence J. Darby, who died in 1987. Born May 5, 1898, in Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Byron and Nannie Keller Johnston. Mrs. Darby was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Gaithersburg, where she had been the church organist for 30 years. She had attended Marion High School, Marion, Va. and before her marriage had worked as a milliner in Gaithersburg. Mrs. Darby was a member of Gaithersburg-Washington Grove Garden Club. She liked to play bridge and was a member of the Bridge Club in Gaithersburg. She was an avid gardener, enjoyed needlework and had done china painting and oil painting. Surviving are one daughter, Nancy D. Swope and husband Irving of Gaithersburg; and one grandson, John L. Hall of Rockville. Friends may visit with the family from noon Thursday, Dec. 23, at Grace United Methodist Church, 119 N. Frederick Ave., Gaithersburg, until time of funeral services at 1 p.m. Interment will be in Monocacy Cemetery, Beallsville. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Music Department of Grace United Methodist Church. Arrangements are by Muriel H. Barber Funeral Home, Laytonsville.
