Description	:	Arlene B. Bauman, 83, of Bern, died May 16, 1999, at the Sabetha Community Hospital, where she had been a patient for one day. She was transferred there from the Apostolic Christian Care Home in Sabetha where she had been a resident since 1998, after she had suffered a stroke. Bauman, 83, of Bern, died May 16, 1999, at the Sabetha Community Hospital, where she had been a patient for one day. She was transferred there from the Apostolic Christian Care Home in Sabetha where she had been a resident since 1998, after she had suffered a stroke. Arlene was born January 15, 1916, on a farm southwest of Bern, the daughter of W.J. and Emma Wittmer Bauman. Arlene attented the District 64 Rural School and graduated from Bern High School in 1933. She attended Emporia Teacher's College in Emporia and earned a teaching certificate. She taught in Bern and Sabetha elementry schools for 46 years before she retired. She also helped out at the Bauman Catering Service in Centralia. She always lived on her parents' farm southwest of Bern where the family raised Black Angus cattle. She also grew many flowers she shared with friends. She attended the Apostolic Christian Church near Bern. She was a member of the Business & Professional Women's Club at Sabetha, the DHS Sewing Club at Bern, and the Nemaha County Retired Teachers Association. For many years she had a regular schedule visiting care homes in th area and volunteered her help with patient activities. She was well known at all the nursing homes in the area as the "cookie lady". Survivors include nieces, Betty Bredemeier Aberle, Sabetha; and Phyllis Chauza, Hiawatha. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Reuben Bauman and Jerry Bauman; and sister, Eula Mae Moser. Funeral services were held at the United Methodist Church in Bern.
