Wade moved to Hand County in 1899, hoping to improve Mr. Wade's health. They brought their family of seven and a uniquely colorful past. He was born in Essexshire, England in 1858, the second son of Thomas W. and Jane Tucker-Wade (both descendants of early rulers of England). In the reign of Henry VIII in 1915, Sir Thomas Wade was appointed ‘Barrister to the Crown' (Legal Adviser to the Royal Family) with certain conditions-(1) He would become a member of the ‘Titled Gentry', (2) His family would receive the landed estate, Rood Hall, at Great Dunmow in Essexshire, England, (3) The eldest son of each generation would inherit the estate and receive the training necessary to qualify him to serve as ‘Barrister to the Crown!' The Wades lived in Rood Hall over four hundred years and served as ‘Barrister to the Crown' until his older brother William died without an heir. During the reign of James I titles of the landed gentry were abolished and the ‘a' in Wada was changed to ‘e' – Wade. The estate was confiscated in 1930 for taxes. One of his relatives wrote Washington's first Inaugural Address and Sir Armigel Wade was the first Englishman to land in North America in Cape Briton, Newfoundland in 1532. Mr. Wade was left an orphan when he was ten years old. He was cared for by a governess, sent to preparatory schools and was a graduate of the medical school of Heidelberg University of Heidelberg, Germany. He served his internship as a lieutenant in the medical corp of the British Army where he was so appalled by the inadequate care of wounds and the resulting infections that he matriculated to Paris for a year of study in the field. Just six weeks before graduation his health broke and he was unable to finish. While in school, although he was only five feet four, he was very active in athletics, winning loving cups and medals in cycling (the bicycle with the big front wheel), wrestling, and long-distance running. While in the University he starred in Cricket and Rugby. After his nervous breakdown he was refused aid from his family at Rood Hall. Discouraged and ill he decided to come to America. He heard of a group of brothers who decided to come to America and establish a kingdom in the New World. He went to them and indentured his services for his transportation. They came to America in 1878…and established the Close Brother's Colony near LeMars, Iowa. They did very well and after a year or two began talking of forming their own government …Mr. Wade was bookkeeper so heard the rumor in time to make other arrangements. He went to the owner of a huge grain farm and got him to pay off the indenture fee so he could work on the farm…He soon found that farm work was too strenuous so started teaching school in Union County, South Dakota. He was then able to pay the farmer and was free to go where he wished. He married one of his pupils (Emma Nixon) and they lived in Iowa where he was a stock buyer for the Huntington Company of Sioux City, Iowa. In 1899 he became so crippled that the doctor advised a change of climate so they bought a ranch in Hand County on the north bank of Wall Lake from Oscar Dearborn. Mr. Wade could neither stand nor walk when they came, but his family of seven was able to care for the ranch. Their address was Dean, South Dakota. At that time the mail from Miller was delivered to small post offices in small stores throughout the country. Dean was the one about eighteen miles south of Miller. A small Congregational church and a rural school were nearby. Mr. Wade raised black Galloway cattle (prize-winning) and continued to act as agent for Huntingtons of Sioux City. Horses and cattle were rounded up from as far south as Gann Valley and west to Chamberlain and driven to railroad shipping points. They often encountered storms, heat and cold, severe winds and sometimes injuries. Mr. Wade was so badly frozen at one time that he was unable to dismount from the horse that had taken him to the lighted window of their home. One of the children happened to see a movement where they had scraped the frost from the window.
