Mrs. Wade (Emma Nixon) was the daughter of Samuel and Jane Tate-Nixon. Mr. Samuel Nixon, an ‘Orangeman' escaped from County Caven, Ireland, during the ‘Protestant Purge' of 1852, and came to America. As soon as he arrived in New York, he sent for his sweetheart Jane Tate of Belfast, Ireland. Her trip required six weeks because of stormy weather. They were married the day she landed because she was afraid to stay alone in the ‘Big City'. They migrated by way of Pennsylvania to Illinois and from there to the Dakota Territory by covered wagon in 1866. They settled in Brule Township, Union County, and Mr. Nixon freighted lumber by oxen for the United States Government. Mrs. Wade was tall (six feet), strong, and efficient. She took care of their family of twelve and with their help milked cows, raised chickens, ducks, geese, and turkeys. The calves were fed by hand so they could make butter and sell it and the buttermilk and cream. They packed the produce from these activities in a buckboard and delivered them in Miller once a week. They gathered choke cherries and buffalo berries along the banks of the lake to make jams and jellies. Sometimes they would take two or three days and drive over to the Missouri River and gather wild fruits. Sometimes the Indians driving through from Fort Thompson to Miller would have wild fruits and they would buy or trade for it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
