Description	:	Stratford Courier August 6, 1942 Obituary Arnold Paul Last rites for Arnold Paul were held Tuesday afternoon with a family service in the home at 2 o'clock followed by a service in the Baptist church at 2:30. The pastor, the Rev. James E. Selander, was in charge of both services. At the church service Mrs. Everett Bergman and Mrs. Marie Martens sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "Does Jesus Care?" with Mrs. James Selander playing the accompaniments. Following the services the flag-draped casket bearing the remains was taken to Dayton cemetery, northwest of Dayton, for interment. There a salute was fired by members of the Dayton Legion post in charge of Sergeant Larson. A member of that post played "Taps" as the close of the burial rites. The casket bearers were Leonard Angstrom, G.O. Johnson, Roy Housberg, LeRoy Landreth, Frank Poulson, M.C. Carlson. Arnold Paul, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ulysses Grant Paul, was born at Dayton, July 20, 1899. He died in his home here on the morning of Aug. 1, 1942, at the age of 43 years, 12 days. He attended school and church at Dayton and was one of the first of Webster county young men to enlist in the World War on April 17, 1917 when he was 17 years old. He served overseas with the 168th Infantry, 42nd Rainbow Division for 18 months and was honorably discharged from the service May 17, 1919. He was in the battle of Chateau-Thierre and it was in this battle that he was gassed which was the cause of his failing health. He was united in marriage with Florence Stoner, of Dayton, on April 23, 1922, in Boone. To this union was born four children all of whom survive their father. They are: Betty Jeanne, Richard Dean, Donald Keith, Jerrold William. For several years he farmed in Iowa and then the family moved to California where they resided for two years. Because of failing health the family returned to this state, arriving Dec. 3, 1927. Two days after their arrival he suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he never fully recovered. On Jan. 5, 1938 he was taken to the Veterans hospital in Des Moines where he was a patient for several months. After his return the family made their home in Stratford. He was united with the Baptist church here, May 6, 1938, and was baptized in July of that year. He re-entered the Veterans hospital on Feb. 9, this year, and was later transferred to Heinz hospital in Chicago, where he received medical treatment for some time, returning home on Easter Sunday. since then he had been bedfast most of the time. His was a long illness and especially for one who was used to being active. He was tenderly cared for by his wife and children throughout his long illness but gas and shock suffered in the war had left their marks, which medical science could not successfully cope with. But he moved himself to be a soldier to the end. He is survived by his bereaved wife, four children and his parents, as well as three brothers and one sister, Ariel of Ames, Leonard and Clare of Sacramento, Calif., and Mrs .Frank Ehen of Ames. Also surviving are other relatives and a host of friends.
