Markwed of Moenville received injuries Sunday afternoon which proved fatal in a short time when a four-horse team he and his son-in-law, Jack Gates, were driving ran away and Mr. Markwed was thrown from the wagon. Mr. Gates escaped injuries. The two had just started for the Hayes road project where they were to go to work Monday morning. They had hitched four horses to the wagon and were not out of sight of the Markwed house when the horse became frightened at something and started to run. Each man had a hold of the lines of one team and as the horses ran down a hill and across a creek, one of the lines that Mr. Markwed had broke and he lost his balance and was thrown from the wagon as it went into the creek. As soon as Mr. Gates saw his father-in-law had been hurt he jumped from the wagon and ran back to help him. He was taken back to his and preparations immediately made to take him to the hospital at Pierre. They had gone less than two miles when he passed away. Death is thought to have been caused from loss of blood, His right arm was broken and a gash cut in it from which he lost blood. He was also injured on one knee which caused considerable loss of blood and was badly bruised about the head and face. He was conscious at the time he was picked up and until a short time before he died. His body was brought to the Boekhout Funeral Chapel in Philip Sunday. Mr. Markwed was a pioneer of the northeast part of Haakon County where he homesteaded 28 years ago. Funeral services were held at the Deep Creek Lutheran Church Tuesday afternoon at 2:00, conducted by Rev. O.H. Olson of Midland. Oscar and William Markwed, John Gates, Lloyd Skates, Ralph Beckwith and Kenneth David acted as pallbearers and burial was made in the Deep Creek cemetery. Friends from all parts of the country were present at his funeral to pay their last tribute to a man whose friendliness will always be a pleasant memory. In his passing the entire community extends sympathy to his bereaved family. This community was shocked Sunday evening to learn of the sudden death of A.O. Markwed, who was fatally injured in a runaway accident near his farm home at Moenville. Arnt. O. Markwed was born in Ringsoker, Norway, March 3rd, 1875 and passed away May 20, 1934, at the age of 59 years, 2 months and 17 days. Little is known of his early childhood only that he spent some time attending parochial school. His parents decided to come to America, leaving him with his grandmother. At the age of ten he made the trip from Norway to LaCrosse, Wisconsin, by himself, without relatives or friends, to join his parents, who had established a home there. This new home was in a country densely wooded and much of his time was spent in logging and clearing the land. In early manhood he secured employment at Caledonia, MN, where he remained for some time. On March 28, 1898, he was united in marriage to Miss Elsie Marie Tosterud. To this union ten children were born, three of whom preceded him in death. The family lived in Minnesota for a number of years, and in 1906 he filed on a homestead in SD, moving here with his family the following year and he has resided her ever since. And so has passed on another pioneer, for Mr. Markwed was truly a part of this country and during his lifetime saw many changes. It was his privilege to take part in the development of this western country. It was his nature to do his part regardless of how hard it was and to make the best of everything. He was always an active member of the Deep Creek Lutheran Church, which he helped to organize in the year 1908. Since then he has been a regular attendant. He always worked for the best of the community and enjoyed the good will and confidence of all his acquaintances, being ever ready to lend a helping hand wherever needed. But his loss will be felt the most keenly in his immediate family. He was a kind loving father, who took great satisfaction in hi children and did everything he could for the best interest of all of them. He has so few advantages in his own youth so it was his ambition to give his children every advantage he could. His family appreciated his interests and he was justified in his pride in them. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, three sons; Oscar, William and Emery of Moenville, four daughters, Mrs. Lloyd Skates, Mrs. Ralph Beckwith, Mrs. John Gates and Mrs. Kenneth David, all of Moenville; a step-father, S. Erickson a brother, H. Markwed, two sisters, Mrs. M. Haug, and Mrs. A. Nesseth, all of West Salem, Wis. also 13 grandchildren and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at the Deep Creek Lutheran Church Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 and was conducted by Re. O.H. Olson with burial at the Deep Creek Cemetery.
