Description	:	Mrs. Mary Markwed, 77 a pioneer of Haakon county, passed away November 18 at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre after a lingering illness. Elsie Maria Tosterud was born on the 15th day of February, 1876 at Feiring, Norway. At the age of seven years, she came with her family to Houston County, Minn. and established a home. In infancy she was baptized in the Lutheran faith and all her life she was a devout member of this church. She grew to womanhood and received her education in Houston county. Elsie Maria Tosterud was born on the 15th day of February, 1876 at Feiring, Norway. At the age of seven years, she came with her family to Houston County, Minn. and established a home. In infancy she was baptized in the Lutheran faith and all her life she was a devout member of this church. She grew to womanhood and received her education in Houston county. On the 28th day of March, 1898, she was united in marriage to Arnt O. Markwed and to this union 10 children were born. Her parents, Mr and Mrs O.J. Tosterud and four of her children preceded her in death; Albert, Walter, Wilbert and Stella. The early part of her married life was spent in Minnesota. In 1907 the family moved to what was then Stanley County and took up a homestead on Deep Creek. She lived to see many changes in this part of the country during her lifetime. She was always interested in improving the community and helping in establishing the Markwed School, and the Deep Creek Lutheran Church of which she was a member for 45 years. After her husband's death in May 1934, she continued to live on the ranch and enjoyed good health until the past spring. She leaves to mourn her passing 6 children; 18 grandchildren; 4 sisters, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
