Grotto A former parishioner, Mr. Albert, son of Xavier Goguen, domiciled in Gardner, Mass., donated two magnificent white marble statues from Italy to the parish : one of the Immaculate Conception and another of Saint Bernadette. This donation was made for the construction of a grotto. The excavation began in 1954 in the form of a frolic. Several men from the parish worked there. They dug a hole 10 feet deep and proceeded to fill it with cement. Father Vautour, wanting to do his part, was wheelbarrowing with the others. At the time, he often suffered from lumbago. He was worn out/exhausted and had to be hospitalized. Work continued in 1955 with Mr. Arthur, son of Onesime Bastarache, a handyman, who built the grotto as we see it today. The grotto was blessed during an outdoor mass on July 17, 1955. Thereafter, the grotto served as resting place for the Corpus Christi procession and other devotions to the Virgin Mary weather permitting.
