Howard SPECIAL ARTHUR MILLS SCOTT was born at Kennedy Flat, near Jackson, CA., October 12, 1875, and departed this life at Ione, CA., April 23, 1903 being 27 years, 6 months and 11 days old. Most of his school days were spent in the Union District. When some six years old he was severely injured by a wagon wheel passing over his head. Often since then he has had headaches which during the last three years has been almost constant and at times severe. Arthur's young manhood was mostly spent passed in Ione, and considerable of the time he has been in the employ of the Railroad Company. He became a fine looking young man, who was always characterized by his neat attire and manly bearing. His character was even superior to his physical appearance. His language and ideals were pure, and aspirations high. He despised the idea of being dependent upon others, although he was extremely attached to his home. Many things which he did, even down to the very last action of his life, may be explained by this one statement, namely: His ideals so far out-reached his confidence as to discourage him. What I mean may be understood better by two illustrations: He was offered positions in the Railroad service better than what he was holding. He would liked to have gone into them but held back for fear that he might be able to at once do all which the better position would require. So as to the church. Often has he expressed his purpose to join the church and live a christian life. But with that expression would come the statement that he was not quite ready to make a public profession; that when he joined the church he wanted to live a fully perfect life; and he would wait a little longer until he would have himself in perfect control; and his material affairs assured of success. So the years began to drift on. His confidence in himself lessened, instead of increasing. Successes of others, in place of exciting him to hope, and to new efforts, began to have a depressing influence upon him. A determination not to be a burden upon others seized him; and, with the erroneous idea that there was but one way to avoid it, he has left us in a moment of yielding to his despondency. We are all sorry. We deeply sympathize with these stricken parents, these four brothers and two sisters. May the lord graciously hold them up as they pass through these waters of affliction. Yet the sorrow that has come upon them has much to alleviate it, and is not by any means so severe as many sons and even daughters threaten to inflict upon their aged parents. Arthur's action, which brings us together today, may rightly be viewed as a sad mistake directed by a discouraged nature and an erroneous judgment. But when we think of him and especially when these loved ones think of him, they have nothing to think of in his bearings but manifestations of good will, sympathy and kindness. If he had only had the courage of his convictions. No other lack can they see. Far better that, than the willful walking in a way which is continually giving one's parents and friends the greatest anxiety and intense pain. Young people let me exhort you to avoid both errors. Older ones, let me ask of you a calm weighing of all the facts entering into the life of the departed and a conclusion filled with deepest sympathy and love for your afflicted neighbors. The funeral of the late ARTHUR M. SCOTT will be held Saturday, April 25, (1903) at 2 o'clock p.m. in the M. E. Church. But straight to my heart it went speeding, to gild the clouds that were there. And I found that of sunshine and life's blue skies, I also may take my share. —
