Asel was the son of Nathaniel Stanley III and Lusannah Fuller of Belfast and Ellsworth, Maine. He is first of record when he served as a musician during the War of 1812 from 1814 to 1815. His service record gives a physical description: blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, 5' 2" per one account and 5' 4" per another; aged 15 by one account, and aged 18 by another. ... Asel was the son of Nathaniel Stanley III and Lusannah Fuller of Belfast and Ellsworth, Maine. He is first of record when he served as a musician during the War of 1812 from 1814 to 1815. His service record gives a physical description: blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, 5' 2" per one account and 5' 4" per another; aged 15 by one account, and aged 18 by another. He was enlisted on 20 (or 26) April 1814 at Northport (then Massachusetts, but now Maine) by Lt. Dearborn for the duration of the war. On a muster roll dated 31 July 1814, he was a drummer in Capt. Benj. Poland's company, and on a muster roll dated 28 June 1815 he was a drum major in Capt. R. R. Kendall's company. He was discharged at Plattsburgh, NY on 22 July 1815, term expired. For his service, on 20 Feb 1818 he was granted 160 acres of bounty land in the Territory of Illinois, he being called a drum major in the 34th Regiment of Infantry. On 8 Apr 1816, Asel Stanley witnessed a deed of Nathaniel Stanley of Belfast (his father) to Nathan Stanley of Belfast (likely his brother) of land in Belfast. He would have still been a minor at the time. On 6 Aug 1824, Asel Stanley sold land that included buildings and a wharf (for $600.00), that was "now in possession of Nathaniel Stanley". On 19 Dec 1825, Asel Stanley of Belfast, mariner, gave a general power of attorney to Nathaniel Stanley; and on 2 Jan 1828, Nathaniel Stanley sold land (for $1,000.00) in Belfast for "Asahel" Stanley, as power of attorney, that was described as formerly belonging to Nathaniel. Asel is not found on any census record in his own name. As a child and young man he was enumerated in the household of his father, Nathaniel in Belfast (Maine): in 1800 as one of the two males under 5, in 1810 as one of the two males aged 10-16; and in 1820 as the male aged 16-26. In 1830 and 1840 he may have been at sea. He was first called a mariner in an 1825 deed, and was called a mariner on 10 June 1844 when he sailed into Boston from abroad. The family was living briefly in Boston in the early 1840s, where one son was buried in 1842, and another son was born in 1843. Asel died in 1847, and some have speculated at sea, but a gravestone was erected for him in his father's family plot in Ellsworth, Maine. Soon after his death, his widow Octavia moved south with her children, and was living in Jackson County, Florida in 1850, next to her brother. In 1860 she was enumerated in Marianna, Jackson Co., Fl; in 1870 in Henry Co., Alabama, and in 1880 in Crawfords & Columbia, Henry Co., AL. She died in 1893, remaining Asel's widow, and is buried in Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery, Houston Co., AL. Children of Asel and Octavia: * Clara Octavia, b. Maine 30 June 1835, d. Lumpkin, Stewart Co., GA 12 Aug 1912, and m. by 1868 Marcus James SOLOMON, b. 11 Mar 1839, d. 1 April 1901. Clara is buried in the North Side Cemetery in Lumpkin. * Sisilena "Lena", b. Maine April 1841, d. 1920, and appears to have remained unmarried, but may have had a daughter, Harriet O. Stanley, living with her in 1870 and 1880. Lena lived with her mother in 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880. * William H., b. Boston, Mass. 31 Jan 1843, d. Houlton, Maine 12 July 1927, and m. (1) c. 1869 Alice Anna CARTER, d. Surry, Maine 15 April 1880, daughter of Asa and Mary R. (carter) Carter; m. (2) 1883 Minta A. CARTER, b. Brooklin, Maine Dec 1859, living in 1900, daughter of Alfred Carter and Malinda Stanley. William is buried in Evergreen Cem., Houlton, ME. * Martha, b. Maine Nov 1844, d. 1927, and had a son named Bryant Edward "Eddy" Willett (1881-1936) * Ruel Woodbury, b. Maine 27 Nov 1846, d. Haleburg, Henry Co., Alabama 8 Jan 1927, m. Henry Co., AL 7 Dec 1875 Sarah Frances NAPIER, b. Wilkinson Co., GA 6 Nov 1852, d. Haleburg, AL 20 April 1923, daughter of John Napier and Nancy Jane Mason.
