Read More	August Pothast No citizen who has lived in Washington township, Marshall county, in recent years had a better reputation or more warm personal friends than did the late August Pothast, who, although he is now sleeping the sleep of the just in "God's silent acre," is well remembered and his influence for good is not lost, but still affects the lives of many of his acquaintances, for his example was ever uplifting and he tried to do his full duty in all the relations of life, being a good neighbor, a public-spirited citizen and kind and indulgent in his home. Mr. Pothast was born in Lippe-Detmold, Germany, June 12, 1841, and his death occurred in Washington township, Marshall county, Iowa, March 23, 1901. He spent his youth in the fatherland and was educated there, coming to this county thirty-three years ago and here he continued to reside until his death, being very successfully engaged in agricultural pursuits, owning at his death a fine farm of three hundred and twenty acres, which he had brought up to a high state of improvement and which yielded abundant harvests under his skillful management. He also raised various kinds of live stock, always handling a good grade. By close application and good management he prospered, all without the assistance of any one save his faithful wife, who owns the home quarter section in Washington township, on which Mr. Pothast erected a substantial, modern and comfortable dwelling and other good buildings. She keeps her home well furnished and neat and here may often be found the many friends of the family who have long enjoyed the hospitality of this pleasant home, from time to time. Mr. Pothast was by trade a stone mason and bricklayer. On January 23, 1868, Mr. Pothast married Wilhelmina Berke, who was born in Anton Hausen, Germany, March 22, 1846, the daughter of Charles and Louisa (Rosenbaum) Berke, both natives of Germany, where they both died when Mrs. Pothast was quite young. Ten children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Pothast, named as follows: Frederick August Ernst, born October 30, 1868, died August 28, 1869; Louis Charles, born December 28, 1869, lives in Washington township, this county; Henry A., born December 12, 1871, lives in Logan township, this county; Frederick William, born May 1, 1873, lives in Washington township; Mary Bosch, born June 15, 1875, lives in Logan township; Fredericka Louise Eibes, born September 21, 1877, lives in Jefferson township; she is a twin sister of Augusta Goecke, who lives near LaMoille; Lydia Wilhelmena Wehrman, born December 22, 1879, lives in Logan township ; William August, born October 9, 1881, lives in Washington township ; Paulina Henrietta and Mrs. Paulinda Wilhelmina Malfeld (twins) were born April 15, 1884, the former died April 13, 1897; Minnie Ruth, born April 24, 1887, died September 19th following; Adolph August Leo, born January 14, 1889, lives with her mother on the home farm.
