Mrs. Porter was born April 10, 1934, in Rockingham County. A graduate of Mars Hill College, Barbara left Mayodan, NC, 60 years ago to experience the world with her husband, Robert Talmadge Porter. She was a special breed, a military wife, living in Hawaii, France and all points in between. In each place she made a home for her family - comfortable, safe and anchored in God's protective hands. She provided a haven to which her husband could return from his world-wide travels to rest and be comforted. Barbara raised three boys who she taught to be gentlemen. Thirty-five years ago, she returned to Mayodan to live on her grandfather's farm near Peach Orchard Road. She gloried in praising God, her music and giving to others. She played piano in numerous churches around the world, directed choirs, taught Sunday school and was forever giving to her community. Whether it was assisting in getting a community building, assisting in directing the Community Choir of Madison-Mayodan, or working with "Hands of God" Ministry, she did it with a huge heart, a smile and a boundless understanding of "when you have done it for the least of these, you have done it for Me." She will be missed. She was preceded in death by her parents, Otis and Marian Priddy and her little sister, Patricia. Survivors include her loving and protective husband of 59 years, Robert Talmadge Porter; her three boys, Samuel Anthony Porter (fiancé, Jan Smith), David Todd Porter (Jen) and Philip Scott Porter (Jennifer); and six grandsons, Robert, Nathan, Daniel, John, Christopher and Jared. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m., Tuesday, at Colonial Funeral Home and all other times at 138 Auction Road, Mayodan. Memorials may be made to Hands of God Ministry, PO Box 358, Madison, NC 27025. Colonial Funeral Home in Madison is serving the family.
