Byrd, her husband. "Barbara (Bobby) Byrd. Barbara (Bobby) Byrd, 84, passed away at the Big Sky Care Center in Helena on Nov. 5, 2005, after a long battle with emphysema. She was born May 16, 1921, in Lincoln, Nev., the third child of Everett and Mathilda Dale of Lyle, S.D. Barbara grew up with four siblings on the family ranch and graduated from school in Lyle. On May 5, 1941, she married the love of her life, John H. Byrd and moved to his home state of Montana. John Byrd was a miner and she was always at his side as they traveled to many mining communities across the West. Bobby was never afraid of a challenge and worked in many different occupations through the years. She was the postmaster in Mikehorse, and then during World War II operated an overhead crane in the naval shipyards in Bremerton, Wash. But the most rewarding parts of her life were spent working side-by-side with her husband in independent mining and logging operations. Since 1955 she had resided in the Helena area. Bobby was passionate about everything she did and friends especially remember her enthusiasm for rock collecting, faceting sapphires, photography, gardening, cooking and her family. Nobody ever left her house a stranger and most ended up sharing a meal. Always willing to stand up for her beliefs, she was a state senatorial candidate in 1972. She was preceded in death by her husband, "Big John;" father; mother; brother, Norton Dale and sister, Marion Oram. She is survived by a brother, Marshall Dale of Helena; sister, Norma Diede of Rapid City, S.D.; son and daughter-in-law, John and Judy Byrd of Piedmont, S.C.; granddaughter and great granddaughter, Michelle and Danielle Ekstrom of Lolo and grandson and wife, Kevin and Staci Byrd of Piedmont. A memorial celebration will be 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 7, at the Canyon Ferry Visitor Center, Bureau of Reclamation Village at 7661 Canyon Ferry Road.
