Description	:	Barbara Jeane Haldius Hill was born on February 16, 1939, in Ames, Iowa. She was a daughter of A.E. and Agnes (Olsson) Hill. Barbara, the second of five children, was raised by her mother. All of the children graduated from Huxley Consolidated High School and grew up in the Lutheran faith and completed confirmation. Barb remembers walking two miles to confirmation class in below zero degree temperatures. She and Carroll T. Sydnes were united in marriage and to this union two daughters were born: Mary and Brenda. She was a daughter of A.E. and Agnes (Olsson) Hill. Barbara, the second of five children, was raised by her mother. All of the children graduated from Huxley Consolidated High School and grew up in the Lutheran faith and completed confirmation. Barb remembers walking two miles to confirmation class in below zero degree temperatures. She and Carroll T. Sydnes were united in marriage and to this union two daughters were born: Mary and Brenda. Carroll passed away in 1965 leaving Barb with two very young daughters. Barbara met Edward De Jong through mutual friends. On August 16, 1968, they were united in marriage in the Chapel of First Reformed Church in Pella, Iowa and on that day Ed legally adopted her two daughters, Mary and Brenda. Barb and Ed became the parents of their son, Michael. They cherished camping trips and vacations with their children and later large family dinners and vacations with grandchildren included. Barbara, a bookkeeper by nature, worked for the Iowa State Highway Commission, JC Penney, the telephone office in Greenbriar, Arkansas, and for McCormick Ford in Washington, Iowa. Her last employment was with the Pella Chamber of Commerce while she did lace cutting for Heritage Lace Company. Following their retirement, Barbara and Ed volunteered on mission trips to Mexico and with several agencies in Pella. They also enjoyed foreign and domestic travel and had visited 11 foreign countries. Barb found pleasure in quilting, scrap booking, embroidery, and ceramics. Ed, her faithful and supportive husband, passed away on June 21,2019, at the age of 86 years. On Monday, April 12, 2021, Barbara passed away at Wesley Life Acres in Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 82 years. Those who will cherish her memory are their family. Of her original family Barbara leaves her brother David Hill and his wife, Barb of Ames, Iowa, her two sisters: Ann Smith of Marshalltown, Iowa and Patricia (Willie) Dolecheck of Johnston, Iowa, a sister-in-law, Audrey (De Jong) Klein of Pella and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Carroll Sydnes and Ed De Jong; a grandson, Phillip C. Kron; her parents, A.E. and Agnes Hill; her brother, Donald Hill and his wife, Norma; her parents-in-law, Jacob G. and Anna C. (Tysseling) De Jong; and the following brothers-in-law and sister-in-law: Willie Dolecheck, Roy Klein, Rev. Herman D. De Jong, Rev. Frances A. De Jong, and a nephew and a niece. Barbara, from the time of her confirmation, grew in her faith with the Lutheran Church and was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church in Pella, Iowa.
