Description	:	Edward Gysbert De Jong was born on May 11, 1933, on a farm northeast of Leighton, Iowa in Mahaska County. He was the oldest son, the second child born to Jacob G. and Anna C. (Tysseling) De Jong. His ancestors, all four of his grandparents, had immigrated from Holland. Read More	Edward Gysbert De Jong was born on May 11, 1933, on a farm northeast of Leighton, Iowa in Mahaska County. He was the oldest son, the second child born to Jacob G. and Anna C. (Tysseling) De Jong. His ancestors, all four of his grandparents, had immigrated from Holland. Ed’s early childhood was spent on farms near Leighton and New Sharon, Iowa, and in 1939 the family moved to a farm four miles east of Pella, Iowa. Growing up the family had very limited means but he never wanted for anything and was always happy. Ed attended the Wheat Grow Country School and Pella Community High School in Pella for one year. On 15 April 1953, he was inducted into the Armed Forces of the United States. Ed served with the U. S. Army during the Korean War and while serving received his G.E.D. Ed was released from active military service on 14 April 1955, and transferred to the Army Reserves. His military experience was something that had to be done and he would not have traded the experience for anything. Following his discharge, Ed drove truck and farmed. While attending an American Legion meeting, Ed met Barbara Jeane Hill through mutual friends. On August 16,1968, they were united in marriage in the Chapel of First Reformed Church in Pella. That same day, Barbara’s two daughters, Mary Joanne Sydnes and Brenda Jeane Sydnes became Ed’s legally adopted daughters. Ed and Barb then had a son, Michael Edward. Ed was involved in mobile home construction and retail feed sales. He served on the Pella Police Department and as Chief of Police. He then became a machine operator at Pella Corporation, where he was employed for 12 years. Following his retirement in 1998, Ed drove school bus for the Pella Community Schools for 14 years. Ed was an active member of the Van Veen-Van Hemert American Legion Post No. 89 of Pella with which he held many elected and appointed positions at all levels. Ed was a capable and willing volunteer with several agencies. He was disaster coordinator for the City of Pella, was Pella’s representative on the Marion County Disaster Board, and Institutional Representative and Sustaining Membership Chairman for the local Boy Scout Troop. He made several ‘mission’ trips to Mexico, worked with Habitat for Humanity, and was a guide at the Vermeer Windmill and volunteer at Bibles for Missions. Ed did gardening, wood working and enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and other activities. He and Barbara liked foreign and domestic traveling and had visited 11 foreign countries. Ed was baptized at the Ebenezer Reformed Church in Leighton and made profession of his faith at the First Reformed Church in Pella. Ed was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church in Pella at the time of his death on June 21, 2019, at the age of 86 years at The Cottages in Pella. Those who will cherish his memory are his wife, Barbara, and their family. Of his original family Ed leaves his sister, Audrey R. (Roy) Klein of Pella, and her family; and two sisters-in-law: Ann Smith of Marshalltown, Iowa and Pat Dolecheck of Johnston, Iowa. Ed was preceded in death by a grandson, Phillip Kron; his parents, Jacob and Anna De Jong; his siblings: Rev. Herman D. De Jong and Rev. Frances A. De Jong; his brother-in-law, Roy Klein; his mother-in-law, Agnes Hill; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Donald and Norma Hill, brother-in-law, Willie Dolecheck; a nephew and a niece. Ed will be remembered as a quiet, patient, loving, considerate husband, father, and grandfather. If asked, he was always willing to express his opinions when he believed in something and had a strong faith in God and for his salvation. A Memorial Service with visitation to follow will be held on Tuesday, June 25, 2019 at 6:30 pm, Peace Lutheran Church, Pella, Iowa. Inurnment will be made in the Black Oak Cemetery, Mahaska County, Iowa. Memorial contributions are suggested for Wesley Life Hospice, Pella Historical Village, or American Legion.
