Pall bearers were Eugene Mertens, Raymond Mertens, Jim Menke, Willard Karmazin, Edwin Soucek and Reynold Goepferich. Barbara Josephine Menke, daughter of Henry and Mary Menke was born in Iowa on May 26, 1877 and died in Red Cloud hospital on Sept. 22 at the age of 81 years, 3 months and 26 days. Death resulted from injuries received in a fall on Sept. 12 at which time she was taken to the hospital. She with her folks and family moved to Nebraska some 70 years ago, being some of the first settlers of this community. On April 25, 1899 she was united in marriage to Joseph Heil at St. Stephens Catholic church. They located on a farm south west of town where Mr. Heil passed away some 20 years ago. Mrs. Heil moved to Lawrence 15 years ago where she made her home up to the time of her death. She is survived by 2 sons, Joseph and George of Lawrence and a daughter, Mrs. Katherine Goepferich of Coffey, Mo.; and a nephew Bill Menke of Nelson whom she raised from infancy. Brothers Ted Menke of Glendale, Oregon, Frank Menke of Stratton, Colo., Joe Menke of Wisconsin, Val Menke of Minn.; Sisters Mrs. Mary Hackman of Hastings, Mrs. Lena Mertens and Miss Anna Menke of Lawrence, Also 21 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Relatives here from a distance for the final rites included Joe Menke and son of Wisconsin, Mr. and Mrs. Val Menke of Minnesota, Mrs. Mary Hackman of Hastings, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon McQuerrey of Kansas City, Mo., Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Marrow and Tommy, and Reynold Goepferich of Denver, Colo., Mrs. Charles Warren of Gelman City, Mo., Donald Goepferich of Ridgeway, Mo.
