Read More	Herman Heinrich (Henry) Menke was born to Johann Dirk and Anna Maria C Rickelman Menke . He met and married Mary C. Beck around 1878 in Lee Co., Iowa and they moved by 1883 to Nuckolls Co., Nebraska. .............................. Henry Menke a long time resident of the St. Stephens community, passed away at the home of his son, Theodore, at Stratton, Colorado, early Friday morning, after an illness of about two weeks. The remains were brought here accompanied by the son, Theodore, arriving Sunday morning, and were taken to the home of a daughter, Mrs. Jos. Heil, until the funeral services. Mr. Menke was born at Hanover, Germany, October 15, 1847, and at the time of his death was 84 years, 1 month and 28 days of age. He was married at Ft. Madison, Iowa, to Mary Beck in 1875, and with her, some years later, moved to Nebraska, settling on a farm about 2 1/2 miles southeast of Lawrence. About twenty years ago Mr. and Mrs. Menke retired to a home in St. Stephens, where they resided until the death of Mrs. Menke on December 18, 1929, since when Mr. Menke had made his home with his sons in Colorado. One daughter of the deceased, Mrs. John Vercamp, passed away in 1922, while five sons and four daughters survive. The surviving children are: Val, of Postville, Iowa; Anton of Des Palos, Calif.; Joseph of Wolf Creek, Wisc.; Frank and Theodore of Stratton, Colo.; Mrs. Ben Hackman of Hastings; Miss Anna Menke of Odell; Mrs. Jos. Heil and Mrs. Chris Mertens of Lawrence. There are also twenty-eight grandchildren and nine great-grand children living. Funeral services took place Monday morning at nine o'clock at St. Stephens Catholic church (sic), conducted by the pastor, Rev. A. Hahn and the body was laid at rest beside the remains of his wife in St. Stephens cemetery (sic). -- Lawrence Locomotive.
