Basal was born in Lucas County, Iowa, February 23, 1906, the oldest son of John Lawrence and Margaret Hagen White. He attended and taught school in Lucas County until he joined the military service during World War II. Hagen OBITUARY THE CHARITON LEADER Chariton, Iowa Tuesday, September 27, 1988 WHITE Basal White, age 82, passed away Saturday, September 17, 1988 at the Veterans Hospital in Knoxville. Basal was born in Lucas County, Iowa, February 23, 1906, the oldest son of John Lawrence and Margaret Hagen White. He attended and taught school in Lucas County until he joined the military service during World War II. Following the war, he married Emma Butcher of Chicago, Ill., continuing to teach school in Illinois and Marion County, Iowa. Following retirement, Basal and Em lived in Illinois until moving to Lucas County in 1977. Basal was a life-long member of Bethel United Methodist Church. His thirst for knowledge and faith in God was evident in all parts of his life. He will be greatly missed by many people. He is survived by his wife, Em of Russell; a brother, Harold and wife Tillie of River Grove, Ill., two step-children, Don Butcher and wife Nena of Downer's Grove, Ill., and Cynthia Anthony and husband Jerry of Sacramento, Calif., eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 21, 1988, at the Fielding Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tompsie Smith officiating. Serving as bearers were Dale White, Dean White, Floyd Coulson, Bryan Butcher, Corey Butcher and Scott Anthony. Interment was in the Bethel Cemetery. Obituary courtesy of Charles M. Wright
