Bell Michael Heffelfinger was born in Wooster, Wayne county, Ohio, November 8, 1858 and was at the time of his death 49 years, 2 months and 16 days old. April 2, 1879, he was married to Louisa Wagner at Geneseo, Ill. In 1888 he removed to Beatrice and engaged in the rendering, slaughtering and wholesale meat business. He also bought and shipped stock, and was quite a feeder. Mr. Heffelfinger served for two terms on the city council, though he never dabbled in politics. He was an active business man and dealt extensively with the farmers, and his word was always as good as a bond in any business or other transaction. Mr. Heffelfinger was first attacked about two years ago with the disease that finally ended his life. He treated and was operated upon, never losing hope that his robust manhood could resist the disease that was growing upon him. About three months ago he had to give up active business and has since been confined to his house. During his illness he tried to be cheerful and to lighten the burden of those who loved him by bearing his afflictions as much as possible himself. The last few days of his life were days of great suffering, and he welcomed death as a relief. He leaves a bereaved wife and five sons, Otis R., Roy W., Harley W., Ray D., and Percy S., and one daughter, Flossie D.; also his aged father, four brothers and two sisters. In his dying moments all of his own family and one sister were at his bedside. In the death of B.M. Heffefinger this community loses a good and a useful man. He was a kind neighbor, a steadfast friend and a man who always spoke well of others, and no person was ever heard to say aught against him. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World, of the Royal Highlanders and of the Odd Fellows. On Sunday last the remains of B.M. Heffelfinger were laid to rest in Evergreen Home cemetery. A brief service was held at the home south of the city, at which Will Lenhart, B.H. Oden and T.R. Fulton, representing the Woodmen of the World, sang a couple of hymns and Rev. J.E. Davis of the Christian church offered a short prayer. The cortege then proceeded to the Christian church, escorted by the orders of which Mr. Heffelfinger was a member, where an impressive service was held, Rev. J.E. Davis preaching the funeral sermon.
