Jennings-Bradshaw American Legion Post No. 39 assisted. Ben William Kolars was born August 14, 1919 in Grant Township, Cuba, Kansas. He was the son of Joseph and Anna Sterba Kolars. He attended Howard Rural School and Haddam and Agenda, Kansas high schools. He married Viola Krhounek, October 9, 1940 in Belleville, Kansas. The couple lived in rural Cuba, Kansas until 1956, when they moved to rural Chelsea, where he was a farmer. Kolars served in the armed forces during World War II. He was in Japan and the Philippines from 1945 until 1946. He was a member of Jennings-Bradshaw American Legion Post No. 39, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Tama; Cuba, Kansas Lodge No. 362 Masons A.F.&A.M.; and was on the Farmers 4-County Coop Board, Belle Plaine. Mr. Kolar is survived by his wife, Viola; three children, Larry, Chelsea, Carl, Marshalltown, and Shirley Cernin, Elberon; one sister, Rose Plevka, McPhcrson, Kansas; two brothers, Joe, Lawrence, Kansas, and Emey, Cuba, Kansas; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. : He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Albina Fritz; and two brothers, Frank and Ed.
