Chaney, 56 years old, which was found in a mangled condition Friday morning on the railroad track near Hamburg, was brought to Villisca on No. 12 Friday evening and taken to the J. L. Smith Co. undertaking rooms where the funeral was held Sunday afternoon. A message informing him of the death was received about noon Friday morning by Mr. Chaney’s son Alonzo, who resides on the D. H. Meyerhoff farm a mile east of Villisica. Mr. Caney was struck by a fas Council Bluffs, St. Joseph and Burlington train some time between 10 o’clock Thursday evening and 6 o’clock Friday morning. The body was found at 6:30 o’clock Friday morning. His head was mashed into a pulp by the train, his left leg and left arm cut off and the wheels of the train also passed diagonally across his chest, mangling it and breaking his right shoulder. Until six months ago Mr. Chaney’s home was in Omaha and at that time he went to Hamburg where he secured work on the farm of Will Goetsche and where he was employed at the time of his death. He was on his way to Goetsche farm carrying an arm load of groceries when he met with his death. It is believed that he stepped around the end of one train in front of the passenger train which struck him. He was very deaf and very probably did not hear the train as it approached him. Apparently the engine men knew nothing of the accident, as it was not reported by the crew. Mr. Chaney’s son Ernest died in Villisca, December 15, 1918 and the father was here at the funeral at that time, but he never lived in this vicinity. He was born at Springfield Ohio on May 5, 1864 and was married at Columbus, Ohio in 1894 to Miss Emma Shaw who is now Mrs. Charles Sprague of Carbon. He leaves besides his son Alonzo living east of Villisca, also a daughter, Phoebe Chaney, who is living with her mother at Carbon. The family formerly lived in Neosho, Missouri. The funeral was held at 2:30 o’clock Sunday afternoon with Rev. E. S. Menoher having charge of the service. Burial was in the Villisca Cemetery. A coroner’s inquest was held in Hamburg Monday morning which was attended by the son, Alonzo. The son also remained at Hamburg long enough to look after the closing up of his father’s affairs there.
