ROSS ANSWERS FINAL ROLL CALL WAS ONE OF THE EARLY SETTLERS IN THE DAKOTAS--A SUCCESSFUL AND UPRIGHT CITIZEN News came over the wire Sunday Morning from White that B.F. Ross was dead. The deceased had been known to be in poor health for some time but his death was not looked for and came as a shock to his relatives and friends. He died Sunday morning at his home in White in the presence of his son and daughter and the funeral occurred Monday afternoon at 2:30 from the Congregational Church at this place. The cause of the late Mr. Ross' death was complications of troubles. He was subject to heart trouble and was also afflicted with dropsy and these reinforced by the hot weather succeeded in terminating his life. His remains were brought to Estelline for burial as we have above stated and the funeral was largely attended despite the fact that for the majority of people this is the busiest season of the year. It was indeed a tribute to the dead soldier and citizen that many farmers left their labors to follow an old comrade and friend to his final resting place. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Sanderson of White, for many years a friend and pastor of the family, and were appropriate and impressive. The church was fittingly decorated with flowers, the choir sang a number of beautiful selections and the sermon was calculated both to eulogize the dead and comfort the living. After the exercises at the church, a large number of friends accompanied the funeral procession to the cemetery where the mortal remains of Mr. Ross were laid to rest beside those of his beloved wife who proceeded him on the journey about three years ago. Benjamin F. Ross was born in New York state in 1834 and was 71 years of age when he died. At the time of his marriage, about 48 years ago, he moved to Albert Lea, Minnesota and lived there until 1880 when he moved to South Dakota where he has lived ever since. He was consequently one of the pioneers of the state and was numbered among that heroic band who, confident of the future of this country, braved innumerable hardships in the early days and lived to see it redeem itself as a veritable land of promise. Deceased's early residence was in the vicinity of Estelline where he owned and operated a farm, but later he moved to White, and has been a resident of that town for some years. B.F. Ross is spoken of by those who were intimately acquainted with him as a man of sterling integrity and admirable personal traits. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and was also a comrade in the local post of the GAR which attended the body. He was a good man, a kind husband, a loving father, an upright citizen and was generally respected and esteemed. He was the father of five children; two sons and three daughters, four of whom, Mrs. N.A. Peugh and William Ross of this place, and Mrs. R.G. Stretch, and Mrs. C.A. Horning of White, live to mourn his loss and perpetuate his fullness. To those stricken relatives, the Tribune extends deepest sympathy in this their hour of grief, but congratulates them that while each backward glance is fraught with pain, it will find nothing in memory's pages of which they need to be ashamed.
