Wilmers Sunday morning at 1 o clock Benjamin Wilmers passed away at his home in the first ward. In our last issue it was stated that he had arrived home the night before. It was known that the family had been expecting the worst and had hastened back that he would be at home when the final summons came. He was very weak when he got home, and only a few of his friends were permitted to see him. He lingered till past midnight and when on o clock was reached Sunday morning he passed peacefully away. The deceased began to fail in health over two years ago, but, it was thought he would rally with care and attention to his health. But consumption eventually developed, and when the dread nature of his disease became known his family and friends despaired of the outcome. He found it necessary last summer to give up a paying business and to seek a more genial climate for the winter. Accordingly he and his three daughters went to Guthrie, Oklahoma, where they remained till a week ago. It was painfully apparent to them that he could not live long, so they hastened back, as above stated. B.G. Wilmers was a native of Cook County, Illinois, and had passed his fiftieth birthday. He lived there until nearly twenty years ago when he came to this county and settled on a farm in Grant Township, just east of town. This was his home till about ten years ago until he moved to town, making this home where he breathed his last breath. Mrs. Wilmers died three years ago, and since that time the household affairs and the family have been under the direction of the eldest daughter, Miss. Rose, whose womanly devotion to her father and sisters has been a matter of praise and commendation to the friends and acquaintances. The younger daughters are Edna and Winnie. The son, Alvin, has reached his majority and at the time of his father death was in Idaho. The deceased was an honest man as ever lived. He was a man of good judgement and prospered in his undertakings. Neighbors regarded him as a safe man to counsel with and he was helpful to those not so well acquainted with business and conditions under which they labored. He was kind to his family and since the death of his wife lived for them alone. As a citizen he was exemplary and bore the respect of all who knew him. The funeral will be held probably Sunday, but this cannot be determined till Alvin is heard from. Source: Carroll Herald February 27, 1901 -------------------------
