Description	:	Obituary Benjamin Jay was born in Hamilton County, Indiana, November 27, 1833, and moved to Iowa with his parents in childhood. He was married to Julia Ann Cline in May 1854 and in 1856 they moved to Atchison county, Kansas. To this union were born six children, four boys and two girls. Read More	Obituary Benjamin Jay was born in Hamilton County, Indiana, November 27, 1833, and moved to Iowa with his parents in childhood. He was married to Julia Ann Cline in May 1854 and in 1856 they moved to Atchison county, Kansas. To this union were born six children, four boys and two girls. Two boys and one girl passed in childhood. Mr. Jay served three years and three months with the 13th Kan. Reg. during the Civil war. After returning home he remained in Atchison county until 1881 when he moved to a farm near Rock Creek where his wife passed away in 1888. He was later married to Mrs. Gish with whom he lived about eight years when she was taken away by death. In the meantime, he retired from the farm, leaving that in charge of his youngest son, Elijah, and built him a home in the village of Rock Creek, where he continued to lead an active life as a carpenter and in improving his home with fruit, garden, and flowers, and with acts of kindness to those of his neighbors who needed a friend. He was married to Mrs. Taylor fourteen years ago and she with his two sons, Wm. of Gates, Okla., and Elijah, of Topeka and his daughter, Mrs. Michael Schaffert of Orange, Calif., survive him. Mr. Jay has not been in good health for more than a year, but has been around tending his garden and chickens until April 27 he became seriously ill with a complication of ailments subject to advance age, and was taken to St. Frances Hospital Topeka, where his wife, his son Elijah and son-in-law, Mr. M. Schaffert, with the best medical attendants did all that could be done. He suffered but little and peacefully passed away, May 8, 1914, being past eighty. His younger years were actively spent for his home, his church and his country. He was converted in early manhood and united with the Friends Church continuing in that relation faithfully until death. Funeral services were conducted by Dr. G.M. Hoffman of Topeka, at the church of Rock Creek Sunday morning and the crowded house attended the friendship and sympathy of the neighborhood for Mr. Jay and family. Interment in Rose Hill cemetery at Valley Falls. Card of Thanks. The family wish to thank the neighbors and friends for their kindness and assistance during the illness and burial of Father Jay.
