He later lived in and represented Tennessee. After leaving the White House, President Polk is believed to have contracted cholera in New Orleans, Louisiana, on a goodwill tour of the South. He died of cholera at his new home, Polk Place, in Nashville, Tennessee, on June 15, 1849, three months after leaving office. Mecklenburg County was formed in 1762 from the western part of Anson County. It was named in commemoration of the marriage of King George III to Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, for whom the county seat Charlotte is named. Due to unsure boundaries, a large part of south and western Mecklenburg County extended into areas that would later form part of the state of South Carolina. In 1768, most of this area (the part of Mecklenburg County west of the Catawba River) was designated Tryon County, North Carolina. Determining the final boundaries of these "western" areas between North and South Carolina was a decades-long process. In 1792 the northeastern part of Mecklenburg County was taken for Cabarrus County. Finally, in 1842 the southeastern part of Mecklenburg County was combined with the western part of Anson County to become Union County. The Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence was allegedly signed on May 20, 1775; if the document is genuine, Mecklenburg County was the first part of the Thirteen Colonies to declare independence from Great Britain. --------------- "Few, if any, records reveal as many details about individuals and families as do the U.S. federal censuses. The United States was the first country to call for a regularly held census. The Constitution required that a census of all "Persons...excluding Indians not taxed" be performed to determine the collection of taxes and the appropriation of seats in the House of Representatives. The first nine censuses from 1790-1870 were organized under the United States Federal Court system. Each district was assigned a U.S. marshal who hired other marshals to administer the census. Governors were responsible for enumeration in territories. The official enumeration day of the 1820 census was 7 August 1820. All questions asked were supposed to refer to that date. By 1820, there were a total of twenty-three states in the Union. The six new states were Louisiana, Indiana, Mississippi, Illinois, Alabama and Maine." -------------- Gold Mining in California and the Treaty On January 24, 1848 in Coloma, El Dorado County, gold was discovered by James Marshall who was hired by John Augustus Sutter to build a sawmill. Sutter was fearful of what would happen if word leaked out about the gold find. On February 2, 1848, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed. President Polk accomplished his goal of a country connected from East coast to West coast. It was his vision and it was accomplished by having Mexico cede California, Texas, and New Mexico in exchange for $15 million. This treaty was signed only nine days after James Marshall found gold in California. The Gold Rush of 1949 would come as word spread about easy wealth and soon 300,000 would-be miners headed for San Francisco by ship or traveled west by the Oregon Trail. The quest for gold reached a fever pitch. Prices for everything escalated so the real gold was made in selling food and mining supplies. Timing was everything. ---------------- Cholera -- A disease that killed hundreds in Sacramento in 1850. Thousands died on ships, in mining camps and wherever sanitation was poor. John Snow in England was a skeptic of the then-dominant miasma theory that stated that diseases such as cholera and bubonic plague were caused by pollution or a noxious form of "bad air". The germ theory of disease had not yet been developed, so Snow did not understand the mechanism by which the disease was transmitted. His observation of the evidence led him to discount the theory of foul air. He first publicized his theory in an 1849 essay, On the Mode of Communication of Cholera, followed by a more detailed treatise in 1855 incorporating the results of his investigation of the role of the water supply in the Sohoepidemic of 1854. Cholera is caused by a number of types of Vibrio cholerae, with some types producing more severe disease than others. It is spread mostly by water and food that has been contaminated with human feces containing the bacteria. Insufficiently cooked seafood is a common source. Humans are the only animal affected. Copeland Dies in Oroville. Marion Lee Copeland, one of Oroville's best known and respected citizens, passed away in Oroville yesterday at noon after a brief illness. Copeland was a native of Stanislaus county, 54 years of age. For over 40 years he has made his home in the vicinity of Oroville and has always taken an active interest in public affairs. For 12 years he was superintendent of the Butte County Hospital, where he proved himself to be an efficient official. At the time of his death he was employed as ditch foreman of the Pacific Gas & Electric company and made his home on the Parrish Ranch between Pentz and Magalia.
