Description	:	Benjamin Toay Ferrill, the son of James and Mary (Toay) Ferrill, was born January 1, 1847 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. His parents had left their native Cornwall county, England, with their two oldest children in 1844, bound for the lead mining region in southwest Wisconsin. The birth of Benjamin’s older sister, Elizabeth, in November of 1844 probably called for a longer stay in Montreal than was planned, and they didn’t finally leave until sometime after Benjamin’s birth in 1847. The birth of Benjamin’s older sister, Elizabeth, in November of 1844 probably called for a longer stay in Montreal than was planned, and they didn’t finally leave until sometime after Benjamin’s birth in 1847. The 1850 census shows them living in the eastern part of Grant county, Wisconsin, and later they moved a short distance to the east, near Linden in Iowa county where James Ferrill was a miller. The 1870 census shows Ben living with his older brother James and family in the village of Spring Grove in Sauk county, Wisconsin, and working as a carpenter. He later moved to Fayette county, Iowa, and married Elsie Goodspeed of West Union, where he ran a general store. She was the daughter of Ira and Julia (Wilson) Goodspeed. Ben and Elsie’s only child, Elsie May “Dolly” Ferrill, was born in Fayette County in November of 1878. In 1883 Ben and family joined a number of relatives and neighbors and took a homestead in the southern part of Hand county, Dakota Territory, about 20 miles south of what is now Miller, South Dakota. In addition to the homestead Ben took a “tree claim” and acquired a cash entry parcel of land. These three parcels totaling 400 acres were a short distance south of Wall Lake in sections 17 and 20 of Pleasant Valley township. They stayed on their Hand county homestead until 1894 when they relocated to a farm near Mina in Edmunds county, South Dakota. Their daughter Dolly died in 1906 and her three children grew up living with the grandparents. Ben Ferrill died in Mina in 1929 and is buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Aberdeen. ----- (obituary, Aberdeen Daily News, Aberdeen, SD, December 17, 1929) MINA PIONEER DIES SUDDENLY Benjamin Toay Ferrill Found Dead in Bed; Came to State in 1883 Benjamin Toay Ferrill, pioneer of Hand and Edmunds counties, was found dead in his bed at his home in Mina yesterday morning by one of his grandchildren. When last seen on Sunday he was seemingly enjoying the best of health, but his advanced years may have caused his death. The deceased would have been 83 years old had he lived until January 1. October 3, 1875, he was married to Elsie D. Goodspeed of West Union, Iowa, where he ran a general merchandise store until 1883. That year they moved to South Dakota, settling and proving up on a claim in Hand county. Thirty-six years ago the family moved to Mina where they have since resided. He leaves to mourn his passing three grandchildren, Alonzo Benjamin Crawford of Mina, Mrs. Leslie Redmon of Ottumwa, Iowa; Wm. F. Crawford of Mina, and three great-grandchildren, Bernice Redmon of Ottumwa, Iowa, Viola May and Marvelyn Crawford of Mina. His wife preceded him three years ago and his only child, a daughter, passed away twenty-three years ago.
