Read More	Mother's Maiden Name: Stout Services will be Saturday for Benjamin W. Krupp, former assistant police chief and longtime Santa Cruz resident, who died Wednesday at a local hospital after a lengthy illness. He was 85. Born in Grand Rapids, Mich., in 1903, Mr. Krupp served in the U.S. Calvary on the south Texas border in 1921 and 1922. He and his wife, Lenore, came to visit an aunt who lived in Boulder Creek in 1927, and never returned to Grand Rapids. Mr. Krupp began working as an auto upholsterer, and opened his own auto upholstery hop on Front Street in 1930. In 1933 he joined the Santa Cruz City Police Department after taking police training at San Jose State. He was promoted to sergeant in 1940, and to captain in 1947. After spending a year as acting assistant chief of police, Mr. Krupp was formally named to the post in 1954. He took a leave of absence from the department in 1943 to join the special police division of the U.S. Navy, and spent 29 months with the Navy as a shore patrolman before receiving an over-age discharge. Taking advantage of a provision in the GI Bill, he enrolled in the FBI academy in Washington, D.C., where he completed the course with honors overall and high honors in marksmanship. An expert shot, Mr. Krupp was credited with defusing a tense situation in which an armed man went berserk and barricaded himself in a house on Walnut Avenue in the early '50s. The man had fired several shots at police when Krupp incapacitated him with a single shot through the man's pistol arm. Mr. Krupp also served as the police department's gunsmith. Mr. Krupp was named assistant chief by Police Chief Al Huntsman after beating out three other applicants on the oral exam. At the time, the assistant chief earned an annual salary of $4,884. Both Mr. Krupp and Mr. Hunstman were significant contributors to the development of Harvey West Park. Mr. Krupp also organized city baseball leagues for youngsters, and volunteered with the Boy Scouts. He and his wife were longtime members of the Garfield Park Christian Church, and Mr. Krupp was a member of the American Legion Post No. 64. Though his official retirement date was 1958, Mr. Krupp left the force in 1957 because of poor health. At his retirement, he told reporters he wanted "to go fish" and to "take a long vacation and get back in shape." At his retirement party at the Trout Farm Inn, members of the police reserve presented him with a telescopic sight for his hunting rifle. Mr. Krupp is survived by his wife, Lenore Krupp of Santa Cruz; his daughter, Bertier Reed, and his sister Luella Pasley, both of Arizona; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. His son, Ben J. Krupp of Santa Cruz, died in 1986, and his grandson Mark Krupp died in 1971. Private interment will be in Oakwood Memorial Park prior to the memorial service, which will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Garfield Park Christian Church, 111 Errett Circle.
