Description	:	Bennett Ervin Engle, 82, of Friend, formerly of Beaver Crossing, died Saturday, September 22, 2011 at the Friend Manor in Friend. He was born on a farm south of Friend July 5, 1919 to Henry William and Eva Elizabeth (Burbach) Engel, the eighth of nine children. Read More	Bennett Ervin Engle, 82, of Friend, formerly of Beaver Crossing, died Saturday, September 22, 2011 at the Friend Manor in Friend. He was born on a farm south of Friend July 5, 1919 to Henry William and Eva Elizabeth (Burbach) Engel, the eighth of nine children. As a young boy, he attended country schools and began his lifelong farming career with his father. As a young man he worked in the CC camps before being called to serve his county in the US Army during WWII. He served in the European Theatre in the motor pool, moving equipment from one location to another. Returning from the service, Ben was united in marriage to Frances E. Johnston on December 22, 1945 at her parents' home in Beaver Crossing and to this union a son, Bennett Lee, Jr., and a daughter, Beth, were born. As a young couple they began their life in Wayne, Nebraska, moving to a farm south of Beaver Crossing where they raised livestock and grains. Ben retired from active farming in 1991. In his retirement he loved having friends and neighbors stop by to visit. He continued his church activity through prayer after he was unable to attend services. In 2001 they moved to the Friend Terrace at Friend. Ben was a member of the United Methodist Church and American Legion Holmes Post #178, both in Beaver Crossing. In 1999 he received his 50-year American Legion membership award. Ben was also a member of 40&8 in Lincoln and was a charter member of the VFW in Seward. He is survived by his wife, Frances, of Friend, his son Benny Engel Jr., and special friend, Nance Percival, both of Beaver Crossing, two grandsons, Scott and wife, P.J., Shawn and wife, Sue; five great-grandchildren, sisters, and brother-in-law, Aline (Clarence) Smith of Killeen, Texas; Ireene Phillips, Lillonett, British Columbia, Canada; Nance's daughter, Meggan, also of Beaver Crossing; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Tillie Soukup, Fred, and Ellen Vossler all of Dorchester, Lee and Dorothy Johnston of Gering, nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Ben was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Beth, in 1968; his brothers, Les, Raymond, and Clarence; sisters, Inez, Jesse, Helen Vossler, and Viola Luke; brothers-in-law Howard Jesse, Walter Phillips, sisters in law Dorothy Engel, Vevia Johnston, and daughter-in-law Marilyn Engel.
