Description	:	Benton C Gruver, lifetime resident of Fayette County, was born in Dover Township, June 39, 1867 and passed away Sunday noon June 25, 1944, five days before his 77th birthday. His boyhood was spent in Dover Township and in Elgin and at the age of twenty, he began work as a telegraph operator for the B. C. R. & N. Railway Company. Read More	Benton C Gruver, lifetime resident of Fayette County, was born in Dover Township, June 39, 1867 and passed away Sunday noon June 25, 1944, five days before his 77th birthday. His boyhood was spent in Dover Township and in Elgin and at the age of twenty, he began work as a telegraph operator for the B. C. R. & N. Railway Company. During his young manhood, he held positions as telegrapher in several towns in the state. In 1890, he was united in marriage to Miss Amazetta Burke of Urbana. To them eight children were born, all of whom survive him. Wilford Earl of Waterloo, Mrs. Beulah Henderson and Mrs. Frances Cline of Clermont, Mrs. Ruth Roberts and Mrs. Lillian Chapman of Pasadena, California, Clarence of Waukon, Russell of Fayette and Benton of North Hollywood, California. Seventeen grand children and three great grandchildren also survive him. Due to travel conditions the children from California were unable to attend the funeral but they will have many happy memories of the last Christmas holidays which their father spent with them in their homes. In 1896, Mr. Gruver moved his family from Elmira to Clermont and here he was station agent until 1906. At that time he became cashier of the Clermont State Bank and served in that capacity until 1929. During his remaining years he was engaged in the insurance business. Since the first part of April ill health confined him to his home where he was cared for by his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Cline. The town of Gruver in North Central Iowa was named in honor of meritorious service of the five Gruver brothers who served the old BCR&N Railway, all equally respected and trusted by their associates. The brothers are all deceased, William J, John A, Charles H, Ulysis Grant and Benton C. Burial was in the Elgin City Cemetery.
