Among the well known older residents of this community were Mr. and Mrs. Berend Buus. They came to South Dakota and Lincoln county in 1888 and located on a farm southwest of Lennox. In 1911 they retired from the farm and moved into Lennox. Berend Buus, a veteran of the Civil War, was born in Ostfriesland, Germany, Nov. 27, 1837. He came to America in the summer of 1864 and in the fall of that year enlisted in the Union forces and served as a soldier until the close of the war. After being mustered out of the army he located near Freeport, IL. On Dec. 18, 1867 he was united in marriage to Kea Frease, also of Freeport, IL. After making their home in Illinois for some time, they moved to Grundy county, IA., residing there until the year 1880 when the family moved to Kansas, where they continued to make their home until coming to South Dakota in 1888.
