He came to America in the month of June, 1870, and made his first home in Clayton county with Lars Wettleson and was there a room mate with Rev. Holm. April 4, 1876, he was united in holy wedlock with Gunild Kittleson. They lived in the Clermont settlement the first two years and then moved to the Nelson farm where they have lived until his death April 21, at the age of seventy-five years, six months and six days. He died from a cancerous growth in his stomach. The Nelson family was blessed with years so they were able to celebrate their golden wedding on June 27, 1926, at the Marion church. This is a privilege and blessing that is accorded to very few. The family together with the departed has been much blessed with good health and only one death has occurred in the family before this, that of Henry Nelson, the only boy, who died at the age of one and one-half years. Mr. Nelson was ill for nearly a year and very sick for three months. This was about 32 [sic] years ago. At this time he began to realize more fully the seriousness of life and he then called upon his Heavenly Father to accept him into a closer union. He looked back upon this year as a disguised blessing. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Mrs. Gunild Nelson, and daughters, Tena Nelson at home, Mrs. Andrew Wold and Mrs. O.K. Houg of St. Olaf, Mrs. Olavus Tollefson of Decorah, and Mrs. H. Landsgard of Clermont, and eight grandchildren. He also leaves one brother and two sisters. These are Ole Nelson and Mrs. Lars Odegaard of Franklin, Minn., and Mrs. Nellie Lamb of San Jose, California, also Miss Julia Wettleson who they cared for as a child in the home. Mr. Nelson was baptized and confirmed in the old country and has been a lifelong member of the Lutheran church. All his life he lived the life of a good Samaritan ever willing to help others. He was greatly interested in the Marion Lutheran church and loved to attend the meetings there. He was a kind neighbor, loving husband and father and an honorable, upright citizen who held the love and respect of everyone with whom he came in contact. He surely will be missed by his neighbors and friends. The funeral services were held at the home and Marion church conducted by his pastor Rev. Tysdal assisted by Rev. Glesne of Decorah. Burial was made in the Marion cemetery." ~Elgin Echo, May 3, 1928
