Barney was born in Kennewick, WA on June 7, 1925, to Irma (McAulay) and Barney Slaugenhaupt, Sr. The family moved to Chelan in 1934, so Barney's father could take a job with an old friend in the hardware business. Barney Jr. graduated from Chelan High School a year early and attended the University of Washington at the age of 17. He then entered service with the Merchant Marine Cadet Corps Academy for three years, before joining his father in the real estate and insurance business in 1946. After his father's death in 1959, he continued to develop the agency currently being run by his son, Jim Slaugenhaupt. He retired in 1986. In 1966, he served as President of the Washington Association of Insurance Agents and was a member of the advertising committee for the National Association. From 1967 to 1969, he served on the Board of Trustees for Wenatchee Valley College and, for a dozen years until it was taken over by Capitol Savings in the early 1980's, he served as Director of Community Savings and Loan. Barney was always involved in service to his community. Barney also served as President of the Chelan Rotary Club, the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce (twice) and the Lake Chelan Golf and Country Club. He was a Board Member of the Lake Chelan Community Hospital. During his retirement years, he was a faithful volunteer for the Chamber and the Chelan Museum, of which he was a lifetime member. He was a member of the Washington State Historical Society, as well as serving as a Board Member of the Lake Chelan Valley Scholarship Fund. Barney was an Eagle Scout. Scouting began a lifelong love of hiking, fishing and hunting on and around the Lake. Barney had many close friends, with whom he and Doris shared these interests. Stehekin was a favorite family and friends meeting place, where they enjoyed a summer cabin at the mouth of the Stehekin River. Doris and Barney spent much time on the Lake in their boat, with friends and family and a succession of Springer Spaniels named Rip. He sailed for many years and crewed with childhood friend, Jim Goodfellow, in the Flying Dutchman class. They qualified for the Pam Am Games and spent many summers sailing together in competitions in British Columbia, Washington and California. Since 1949, he'd been married to Doris Border, whom he met while she was visiting her father, who had moved to Wenatchee to work as a fruit broker. They've been constant companions since their first blind date, skiing in Waterville. Barney and Doris loved to travel and visited many wonderful places in their life together. Adventures included trips to New Zealand with close friends, Art and Kathleen Campbell, Hawaii, Mexico and much of the U.S. in an RV. Dad always included Doris on adventures many women of the time wouldn't have taken advantage of. He called her a "good sport." They hunted, backpacked, sailed, played cards and, as always, loved spending time with a wonderful group of friends and entertaining at their home. Everyone felt welcome there and the house was rarely empty. Barney and Doris recently celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary. Truly, Barney was someone many people loved. Dad never had a bad word to say about anyone and he was an extremely patient and loving man. His family feels privileged having had the mentorship of his years of wise words, kind guidance and quiet leadership. His love of poetry and the telling of a good story will be remembered and treasured. His interest and knowledge of local history was incredible. He was a lifelong collector of stamps and we will think of him often, working in the den on his hobby, whistling softly as he worked. We love you, Dad. He is survived by his wife, Doris; son, Jim Slaugenhaupt (Sue) of Chelan; daughters, Sue Walker (Dave Clouse) of Chelan and Liz Hambleton (Jim) of Sammamish; grandchildren, Carrie and Amy Slaugenhaupt, Stephanie and Morgan Walker, Jenny Hambleton, Mike Button (Stephanie) and Charley and Sean Clouse; as well as great-grandson, Ethan Walker. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Helen Harn; and son, Dick Slaugenhaupt. A Tribute Service will take place on Saturday, October 10, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. at Riverview Cemetery, in Chelan, with Rev. Frank Needles officiating. Donations may be made to Lake Chelan Valley Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 1005, Chelan, WA 98816-1005 or Dick Slaugenhaupt Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Betsy Kronschnabel, P.O. Box 366, Chelan, WA 98816-0366. There will be no Visitation. Services have been entrusted to Precht Rose Chapel, Chelan.
