Read More	First Creighton Casualty in World War II Family Receives Word That He Lost His Life in the Performance of His Duty. First Creighton casualty in World War II is Bernard Leland Blair, son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Blair. In a message Tuesday afternoon the family learned that he had been killed in action, while performing his duty with the United States Navy. While no information was given as to location of the scene, his family believed he was stationed in North Africa, when killed. In a letter sometime ago he wrote that he intended to look up a soldier from Creighton and because it was known the soldier is in North Africa, the family believe that is where he was. Nothing had been heard from him for two months and his family feared that something had happened. The telegram, which was signed by Rev. Admiral Randall Jacobe, chief of naval personnel, read as follows; "The navy department deeply regrets to inform you that your son, Bernard Leland Blair, motor machinists mate, second class, U.S naval reserve, was killed in action to the performance of his duty and the service of his country. This department extends to you its sincere sympathy in your great loss. On account of existing conditions the body, if recovered, can not be returned at present." Bernard enlisted in the navy on July 19, 1942, shortly after his 21st birthday on May 31st. He was sent to school for three and one half months and soon after completing his studies transferred to machinist from engineer duties. He was a graduate of Creighton High School with the class of 1939 and spent part of the time after graduation and before the war, working in his uncle, Homer Blair's store. Besides his parents he is survived by seven brothers, Melvin, Pvt. James of Calif., Robert, Edward, Raymond, Harold and Dale and six sisters, Evelyn, Ruth, Dorothy, Edna, Donna and Barbara.
