Bernard is survived by his wife, Norma, of Poncha Springs, two sons, William N (Lisa) Friend and Roy Alan (Janet) Friend of Salida, a daughter Mary Jean (Richard) Welden of Delta, brother, Charles Friend of Penrose, Thursday, April 2 at Emma Ogden of Grand Junction; and five grandchildren. Funeral services are set for 2 pm, Friday, April 3, at Temple Baptist Church. Visitation from 9 am to noon and 1 to 4 pm today , Thursday, April 2, at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home. Bernard Nobel Friend, 70, died Mar 31, 1998 at Salida Colo. He was born July 27, 1927, in Coldwater, to Nobel and Nellie Squires Friend. He attended New Home Grade School in Coldwater and Coldwater High school. He quit school to join the Marines in the spring of 1945 and served for the duration of World War II plus six months. On returning home he graduated with his class from Wilmore High School in 1946. He married Norma Jean Uhl in Wilmore in 1947. They lived 50 years on the family Polled Hereford ranch outside Poncha Springs, Colo, where they raised three children and shared their home with over 200 kids. Bernard accepted Christ as his savior in 1954. He and his wife were among the first group baptized in the new baptistery of Temple Baptist Church. He worked many years in the youth department there. In 1975-76 he ran heavy equipment on the Alaskan pipeline. Bernard was preceded in death by his parents, brother Russell and a granddaughter. He is survived by his wife, daughter Mary and Richard Weldon of Delta, Colo; sons William and Lisa, and Roy and Janet of Salida, five grandchildren, Chris Weldon, Cory and Cari Friend, Kendal and Brett Friend; his sister, Emma and Jack Ogden of Grand Junction, brother Charlie and Joanne Friend of Penrose, many nephews and nieces and cousins. Funeral services were held April 3 at Temple Baptist Church, with Rev C. Ray Adkins officiating and arrangements by Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home. Interment followed at Poncha Springs Cemetery, with full military honors.
