The family moved to Woods County, Oklahoma, while the state was still Indian Territory. They lived in a dugout for the first year. Nobel learned ranching and blacksmithing from his father and continued ranching and farming near Coldwater in the early 1920's. On August 16, 1922, he was united in marriage to Nellie Elizabeth Squire. To this union were born four children: Russell, Emma, Bernard, and Charlie. Russell preceded him in death. The Friends moved from Kansas to their ranch west of Salida, Colo, in Aug 1948, where they lived until his death on April 2, 1990 at age 86 years and nine months. Noble was an active rancher, cattle buyer, and government trapper until recent years. He was also interested in mining. He was very interested in helping young people and especially enjoyed his grandchildren. Nobel is survived by his wife, Nellie, of the home; sons, Bernard and wife Norma of Salida, Colo, Charlie and wife Joanne of Canon City, Colo, and daughter, Emma and husband Jack Ogden of Grand Junction, Colo. He is also survived by one brother, Cecil and wife Lorena of Freedom, Okla, and sister, Gladys and husband, Merle Bowman of Coldwater; also 13 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. Many relatives and friends also mourn his death. Portion of obituary from The Mountain Mail, Salida , Colorado, Monday April 9, 1990. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Lewis and Glenn Funeral Chapel for longtime Poncha Springs rancher Nobel R Friend. Rev John McKnight presided. Tapes of Nobel's favorite songs were used as a musical background. Serving as casket-bearers were Roy Friend, Bill Friend, Mike Smith, Richard Friend, Clayton Ogden, Clifton Ogden, and Doug Kline. Interment was in Poncha Springs Cemetery.
