Ben was born October 20, 1912, on a farm south of Raleigh. He was the 15th of 17 children born to Rochus and Marian (Steiert) Ternes. Ben married Anna Marie Riehl, daughter of Eugene and Josephine (Vetter) Riehl, in 1935. Ben and Anna lived on his parents' farm for the first year. They moved to Raleigh, where they operated the bar until World War II. Having three children, he chose the option of farming rather than the military. After the war ended they moved back to town, where he started operating Raleigh Lumber Yard and Raleigh Candy Shop, and continued to farm. In 1975 Ben and Anna moved to Bismarck. Ben took a part-time job with the Holiday Inn for several years. Ben was known for his large garden and generoisty in sharing its abundance. His wife, Anna, passed away January 05, 2002, in Bismarck and was buried at St. Gertrude Cemetery, Raleigh. Ben is survived by his children, Leo and Peggy (Mahrer), Tulsa, Oklahoma, Delores and Miles Utter, Bismarck, Claudia and Richard Noble, Gig Harbor, Washington, Elaine and Kay Kittler, Redmond, Washington, Donna and Gene Wanner, Cheyenne, Wyoming, Clarence and Bonnie (Siegfried), Emmett, Idaho,, Harold and Karen (Bullinger), Meridian, Idaho, Steve, Aurora, Colorado, and Addie, St. Paul, Minnesota; 18 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; one sister, Ipprozina Bachmeier, Mandan; one brother, Peter, Bismarck; and one sister-in-law, Anna Ternes. Ben was preceded in death by his parents; and his brothers and sisters, Edward and Rose (Erker) Ternes, Anselm and Deonelia (Braun) Ternes, Anton and Marcelena (Gross) Ternes, Emerenz and Lorenz Loeb, Rufina and Alexander Loeb, Auroa and Louis Koch, Adam, Zacheus, Philip and Magdalena (Hersch) Ternes, Michael Ternes, Cordelia and Dayo Loeb, Verna and Michael Kopp, Peter Bachmeier and Rose (Scholl) Ternes.
