Judge Holland had been a summer resident of East Dennis since his marriage in 1907 to Helen F. Chapman, daughter of Samuel Chapman of East Dennis. Judge Holland had been a summer resident of East Dennis since his marriage in 1907 to Helen F. Chapman, daughter of Samuel Chapman of East Dennis. Mrs. Holland was a seventh generation descendant of Isaac Chapman who acquired the East Dennis homestead in 1696 from Samuel Worden. He was born in Wilmot, N.H, Aug. 18, 1866, the son of Joshua and Pluma F. (Stearns) Holland. After teaching school in Vermont and New Hampshire, Judge Holland came to the Cape to teach in the grade school at South Dennis. After teaching there for a short period he was transferred to the high school on the North Side where he taught for a number of years, during which time he roomed and boarded at the Samuel Chapman home. He gave up a teaching career to study law at Boston University School of Law, graduating in 1899. Admitted to the Massachusetts Bar in the same year, he started practicing law in Boston where he maintained a law office until the time of his death. In 1930 he formed a law partnership with Whitfield W. Johnson and thereafter practiced under the firm name of Holland & Johnson. In 1921 Governor Cox appointed him a special justice of the West Roxbury District Court of the City of Boston, a position which he held with distinction until his retirement in December, 1956. Until shortly before his death he held directorships in the Jamaica Plain Cooperative Bank and the Pioneer-Trimount Cooperative Bank of Boston. At the time of his death he was trustee of several substantial trusts, director of the James Sugden Company and trustee of the Boston Penny Savings Bank. As a young man Judge Holland attended Proctor Academy in Andover, N.H., graduating in the Class of 1888. At the time of his death he was the oldest living alumnus of this academy. He was first elected trustee of the academy in 1912 and served intermittently for a total of 20 years. Last October, through his generosity, the Holland Memorial Auditorium was erected at the academy in memory of his wife, Helen Chapman Holland, who predeceased him in 1950, and her sister, S. Luella Chapman, who died in 1942. He was a member of the Dartmouth College Class of 1892. In 1913 he received the degree of Master of Laws from Boston University which honored him in 1955 by conferring upon him an honorary doctor of laws degree. He was an active and loyal alumnus of the university and was president of its Law School Association. Judge Holland has been an active Mason for a great many years and retained his interest in the fraternity up to the time of his death. Among his various Masonic affiliations he held membership in the Sylvester Baxter Royal Arch Chapter of West Harwich. For a great many years Judge Holland was active in the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts. He was a Past Master of his Blue Lodge, Past Commander of Knights Templar and for three years presided over one of the Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley of Boston. In 1928 he received the Honorary 33rd degree in the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. Among his non-Masonic affiliations he held membership in the New England Historical Genealogical Society, the Sons of the American Revolution, Middlesex Club, Massachusetts Horticultural Society and the Footlights Club of Jamaica Plain. He is survived by one brother, William Scott Holland, of Penacook, N.H., and by several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Funeral services were held at the First Church Unitarian in Jamaica Plain, of which he was a member, on Thursday, April 3. Rev. Francis Dee Taylor conducted the funeral services. A committal service was conducted by Rev. Robert C. Withington at the Dennis cemetery in North Dennis at 4 o'clock in the afternoon. (Yarmouth Register, Friday, April 04, 1958; Page: 6)
