That man i Bert L. Hall, Kennebec, who retired July 1 after 15 years as a conservation aide with the U.S. Soil Conservation Service. In the last decade he has the distinction of planting more trees and shrubs int his county than any other man. Estimated number comes close to 400,000. Previously, only trees were those seen along the creeks and rivers or the ones planted by a few hardy homesteaders who had faith in this new country settled only a little more than half a century ago. A few plots were planted by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the '30s. Today the county's landscape has taken on a new appearance. Young windbreaks are growing nicely around the farmsteads and ranch headquarters. Hall said, "In the last five years, great interest has been shown in wildlife cover plantings of which there are a considerable number now. In years to come residents will be grateful to the friendly conservationist who had a hand in starting their tree plots and will point with pride to the groves which, in addition to giving much pleasure and beauty, will conserve the soil and even perhaps stabilize the erratic rainfall. Not so conspicuous, but equally important, is the work that occupied Hall during other seasons of the years he was employed by the SCS. He helped stake hundreds of dams in the area served by the American Creek Soil Conservation District, laid out terraces, sod waterways and water spreaders. Hall has other claims to fame for which he is more well-known throughout South Dakota and Western United States. Most notable is his book, "Roundup Years — Old Muddy to the Black Hills." He also has the honor of being named one of South Dakota's two trustees to the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Museum which was instigated three years ago and will be built at Oklahoma City, Okla., next year. Handling the sale of his book and planning a membership campaign among South Dakotans this fall for the Cowboy Shrine will so completely occupy his leisure hours that he will not have time to brood over his retirement from Civil Service. A native of Buffalo County, this tree expert, who includes cowboy boots and hat as part of his garb has always been interested in preserving history and lore of western Dakota pioneers and cowboys. Culmination was a request by the Last Roundup Club (1902 cowboys) of which Hall is tally checker to compile a history of old-timers in the West River area. Many of the early pioneers — cowpokes, cattle barons and homesteaders — or their children were still living. Tales they handed down were more colorful and exciting, besides being authentic, than any a Hollywood producer could dream up. Hall, with his rich background and keen interest, was the logical person to bind the stories under one cover. It was a momentous task. Beginning in 1948 he made many trips around the area, took pictures, combed the libraries and museums, talked to hundreds of people, wrote letters requesting historical bits. Everyone expressed interest and as a result Hall remarked wryly, "I had enough material for two books." In August, 1954, the book came from the printers — 585 pages. By June of 1955 it was sold out and in 1956 Hall brought out a revision numbering 620 pages which is on sale today.... ....This tree expert and author is much in demand as master of ceremonies at various banquets. In addition to his dry wit, off-color jokes and pan-faced expressions—he has no hearty laugh—he bedecks himself out in an outlandish costume and stages his own style show to the delight of his audience. He always draws a crowd. Hall is a 1913 graduate of Yankton College where he played football with State Historian Will Robinson and Bert Fenenga, present director of admissions at Yankton College. He has maintained his friendship with both men down through the years. He and Robinson spend many hours piecing bits of western history together. Their most recent trip was a burro ride up Bear Butte in Meade County. After graduation he went to the Nebraska Sand Hills and secured a kinkaid, or section of land, on which he homesteaded. In 1921 he was married to Amy B. Morris who was teaching in a rural high school at Giddings, Hughes County. From 1928 to 1931 the Halls owned the Dakota Map Co., a successor to the Olander Co., at Pierre. "During the depression people lost interest," Hall recalled, and the company folded. He served as Hughes County superintendent of schools and during that time compiled a history of that county which was published in 1937. Requests still come in for a copy of which he has a few left. Mrs. Hall passed away in 1952. Their children are Roger, band director and instructor at Presho high school; David, with the State Department, Washington, D. C.; Philip, an optometrist, Sheridan, Wyo.; Edgar, attending college at Knoxville, Tenn.; Jerry, dentist and lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and stationed in Hawaii, and Miriam, on the staff of Oregon Agricultural College at Corvallis. All are married except Miriam who has a flair for writing and was graduated from South Dakota State College with a degree in home economics and journalism. Asked if he was thinking of writing another book, Hall said, "No." However, he plans to keep his residence at Kennebec temporarily, and has a project or two up his sleeve.
