Bert's parents were: Francis Wayland Selfe (1877 - 1954) Cora Katherine Kiser Selfe (1886 - 1975)
Bert was the second of 8 sons. On April 21, 1910, Bert, age 2, lived with his parents, F. Wayland & Cora Self, ages 33 & 25, who were buying a farm in Castlewood, VA. His siblings included two brothers, Billey, age 4 & Leon, 4 months. -----
On January 27, 1920, Bert, age 12, lived on a farm in Castlewood owned by his parents, F. Wayland & Cora Selfe, ages 41 & 33. His siblings included: Billy Obrian Selfe 13 Francis L Selfe 10 Robert Walter Selfe 7 Paul Wilson Selfe 4 Charlie Rolfe Selfe 2 yrs. 3 months Silas Counts Selfe 9 months -----
On April 28, 1930, Bert Selfe, age 22, was lodging with William S. & Mary J. Kiser, ages 60 & 52, and helping with the farm work. Other members of the family included their daughters, Eula M. & Berlin M., ages 29 & 16. Eula, who he would marry 3 years later, was a public school teacher.
Other members of the household included William's grandparents, Melissa H. & Andrew J. Kiser, ages 89 & 88, and their son, Samuel J. Kiser, single, age 53. James W. Lester, age 5, William & Mary's grandson lived with them. -----
Bert was 25 years old when he & Eula Beatrice Kiser, age 32, were married in Lewis Co, WA on June 3, 1933, by Rev. E.L. Whisler. They had two sons, Stuart Stratton and Stanley Lewis.
Bert was a farmer and logger and enjoyed hunting. He once sent a cougar hide to his family in VA. *****
Newspaper articles over the years have helped provide a birds-eye view into his family. Bert's last name has been spelled Self & Selfe (the correct spelling).

"SWOFFORD SELF-KISER NUTPTIAL EVENT AT SWOFFORD A beautiful and impressive marriage ceremony was performed by Rev. E.L. Whisler Saturday, June 3, at 2 p.m. at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W.S. Kiser, when their daughter, Miss Eula Beatrice, became the bride of Bert M. Self.
The bride was beautifully gowned in white taffeta with a touch of old rose trimming and carried a lovely bouquet of rose-buds. Miss Berlin Kiser, bridesmaid, a sister of the bride, wore a dress of green crepe and her bouquet was of pink carnations.
The groom was attired in the conventional blue and was attended by Wallace Osborne.
Immediately following the ceremony refreshments were served to all the guests, the lovely bridal and wedding cakes being baked by Mrs. Claire Pierson of Silver Creek. The bride and groom were the recipients of may nice gifts.

Eula's Grandmother Kiser dies. Chehalis Bee Nugget Friday, April 17, 1936 SWOFFORD NEWS "Miss Berlin Kiser, who works in Portland, was called home Tuesday by the serious illness of her grandmother. The funeral of Grandma Kiser was held in the home of her son, W.S. Kiser Saturday, April 4, and the body laid to rest in the Swofford cemetery. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family for we, too, will miss 'Grandma."
Mr. and Mrs. Bert Self and son spent the week end in Buckley. Mrs. T.C. Rhodes, Mrs. Self's aunt, returning with them." -----

On April 24/25, 1940, Bert M. & Eula B. Selfe, ages 32 & 39, owned a home on Swofford Road in Sulphur Creek, Lewis Co, WA. They had two sons, Stuart & Stanley, ages 4 & 3. Eula's uncle, Sam J. Kiser, single, age 62, lived with them. Bert supported them by working as a logger. -----

Centralia Daily Chronicle Tuesday, January 14, 1958 "Voters OK FP District voters in the Salkum - Silver Creek area got themselves a brand new fire protection district Saturday by voting for it 122 to 19 in a special election. They also chose Walter Sears, Bert M. Selfe and Harry Thompson to serve as its board of commissioners until the next regular election this coming November.
The new district is to be known as Lewis county Fire Protection District No. 8, embraces an area of approximately 23 square miles, and includes all of part of Salkum, Ferry, Granite, and Ethel precincts, with 940 registered voters. The special election did not present a proposition calling for a tax levy to support the new district." -----
Bert died in Seattle on July 22, 1963.
Centralia Daily Chronicle Wednesday, July 24, 1963 "ONALASKAN IS STRICKEN Onalaska - A retired logger, Bert M. Selfe, 55, died suddenly Monday, while visiting friends in Seattle.
Born Sept. 10, 1907, in Russell County, Va., he had lived in the Onalaska and Mossyrock area for many years.
In addition to the widow, Eula, at home, survivors include two sons, Stuart, at home, and Stanley, Mossyrock; six brothers, Ralph, Onalaska, Paul, Pleasant Grove, Utah; Robert, Columbus, Ohio; Glenn, Knoxville, Tenn., and Clyde and Bill, both of Richmond, Va., and his mother, Mrs. Cora Selfe, Castlewood, Va.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 p.m., at the Church of the Brethren, Ajlune, with the Rev. L.C. Christian officiating. Burial will follow at the Swofford cemetery under the direction of Fir Lawn chapel, Toledo." -----
