They had two sons, Stuart Stratton and Stanley Lewis. *** On May 5, 1910,** Eula B., age 9, lived in Sulpur Creek, Lewis Co, WA with her father, William S. & Mary J. Kiser, ages 40 & 33, who owned a farm. Her parents had been married 15 years; her mother had given birth to 6 children - 5 were living. They were: Tempy Kiser 14 Eula B Kiser 9 Paula V Kiser 7 William H J Kiser 5 Daphne J Kiser 2 Other members of the household included her grandmother, Melissa H. Kiser, age 69, & her uncle, Joseph W. Kiser, single, age 35, who helped her father on the farm. Melissa had been married 47 years & given birth to 7 children; 6 were living. "SWOFFORD SELF-KISER NUTPTIAL EVENT AT SWOFFORD A beautiful and impressive marriage ceremony was performed by Rev. E.L. Whisler Saturday, June 3, at 2 p.m. at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W.S. Kiser, when their daughter, Miss Eula Beatrice, became the bride of Bert M. Self. The bride was beautifully gowned in white taffeta with a touch of old rose trimming and carried a lovely bouquet of rose-buds. Miss Berlin Kiser, bridesmaid, a sister of the bride, wore a dress of green crepe and her bouquet was of pink carnations. The groom was attired in the conventional blue and was attended by Wallace Osborne. Immediately following the ceremony refreshments were served to all the guests, the lovely bridal and wedding cakes being baked by Mrs. Claire Pierson of Silver Creek. The bride and groom were the recipients of may nice gifts. Those present at the wedding were Mr. and Mrs. W.S. Whisler, ... " ----- From Mildred Gail (Kiser) Rose's book, "Kiser - Family and Descendant of John M. Kiser," published in 1980. As told by Eula. "After graduating from high school and Bellingham State Normal School (now Western Washington State College), Eula taught grade school for 13 years in school district 206 in Lewis County, WA. Her first two terms of teaching were at the Lone Trail School in 1920 - 1921, receiving a monthly salary of $75. She paid $25 per month room and board. On Friday after school she walked six to eight miles to her parent's home, returning to her boarding place on Sunday afternoon. This one-room school house was built in a small clearing in the woods, on the sough slopes of what is now Peterman Mill. It was made of split cedar boards and covered with home-made shakes and had a ceiling made with planed, sawed lumber that was brought in on a sled. There were two small windows in the west side, and a lean-to woodshed attached to the east side. The door and a porch were at the north end. A water pail sat on a shelf on the porch and a dipper hung on the wall. They carried their water from a small stream which flowed from a spring up in the hill. Ten pupils from three families made up the school. One morning, when Eula arrived at the school, she herd a weird noise in the woodshed. Looking in she was a mother pig and about a dozen baby piglets. Thee of the little ones were very weak and cold. That very day, Miss Meighen, the county superintendent, came to visit the school. As Eula tells it ... 'Thinking we should do something for the weak piglets, we made a bed for them behind the stove and kept them there the rest of the day. I put them back with their mother before leaving the school house that evening. This was the last I saw of the pig family.' The other years Eula taught in more modern schools, but they wee not any more enjoyable because she enjoyed all of them. During the 13 years her salary increased to $130 per month, including the janitor work. Other years Eula was closer and stayed at home. In June 1933 she married Bert Selfe, of Castlewood, Virginia. They wee married at her parent's home. Their first home was on a small farm joining her parents. She too, heated with wood stove, washed on a washboard, used kerosene for lights and lanterns for light. They had a few milk cows, and Bert worked in the woods falling and bucking timber. Their home was blessed with two lively sons, Stuart Stratton Selfe, and Stanley Lewis Selfe. In 1936 Bert's brother, Ralph, from Virginia, made his home with them and graduated from Mossyrock High School. He helped with the farm work, including clearing the land. Eula's uncle Sam spent the last several months of his life living with them in Swofford Valley. Uncle Joe spent the last several weeks of his life living with them, after they moved to the Onalaska community, whee they raised beef cattle. Bert work with the County Road Commission there. They sold the old home place, in Swofford (including Sherman's home). Bert passed away in 1963. Stuart and Eula still live on the farm at Onalaska, Washington." ----- On April 24/25, 1940, Bert M. & Eula B. Selfe, ages 32 & 39, owned a home on Swofford Road in Sulphur Creek, Lewis Co, WA. They had two sons, Stuart & Stanley, ages 4 & 3. Eula's uncle, Sam J. Kiser, single, age 62, lived with them. Bert supported them by working as a logger. ----- Bert died in Seattle, WA on July 22, 1963. His obituary can be seen on his memorial. October 19, 1991 "EULA B. SELFE An 85 year resident of Lewis County, Eula B. Selfe, died Thursday, Oct. 17, in Onalaska at the home of her son. She was 91. Born June 15, 1900, at Castlewood, Va., she moved west with her parents, William Sherman and Mary Jane (Sutherland) Kiser, and family to Ajlune. She graduated from Mossyrock High School in 1018, and from Bellingham Normal School in 1920. Her first two years of teaching were at a one-room school at Lone Trail in Lewis County. She also taught at the Baugh, Swofford and Ajlune schools. Her last years of teaching were at Mossyrock Grade School. She married Bert Selfe in 1933, and they continued living in Swofford Valley until 1954, when they moved to the Onalaska area. She taught Sunday school classes at the Brethren Church for years and also taught at the Church of God in Onalaska. She joined the Baptist Church while attending normal school in Bellingham. She had been attending the Church of God since moving to the Onalaska area. Surviving are a son, Stuart of Onalaska, and a sister, Berlin Osborne of Mossyrock. Her husband, Bert, and a son, Stanley preceded her in death. Arrangements are under the direction of Fir Lawn Funeral Chapel in Toledo." ----- Funeral Notice "EULA B. SELFE A funeral for Eula B. Selfe will be held Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 1 p.m. at the church of the Brethren in Ajlune with Rev. Paul Buntain officiating. Interment will be in the Swofford Cemetery near Mossyrock.
