She had been in the hospital since September 11, and had a mote or less extended illness. Funeral services were held art the First Presbyterian Church on Tuesday afternoon, with her pastor, Rev. Bertha Josephine Shaft was born at Clements, Kans., February 3, 1881, the daughter of Clay Shaft and Ella Weesner Shaft, passing away on September 28, 1947, aged 66 years, 7 months and 28 days. She was raised at Clements, where she was married April 3 1900, to Clarence E. Hedrick. In 1908 they moved to Newton and had made their home here ever since. Mrs. Hedrick was a life long Christian, having joined the Presbyterian church as a girl. She had been a member of the First Presbyterian church of Newton since 1911. She was always active in the church especially in the Women's Missionary Society, Anna Ellen Missionary Society, and the Ladies Aid. She was also active in the Red Cross, of which organization she served as county knitting chairman for several years during the war. Mrs. Hedrick is survived by her husband; her three children, Clay E., Carl B. and Cora, Mrs. John McCuish, all of Newton; five grandchildren, Mrs. Robert Stewart, Kansas City, Mo., Clay E., John Edward, Georgianne and Dorothy Hedrick, all of Newton, and by following brothers and sister: Mrs. Jessie Stephenson of Clements, Kans., Mrs. E. G. Hedrick and Paul E. Shaft of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. C. W. Riley of Parkville, Mo., and Edward L. Shaft of Wichita. A host of other relatives and friends also survive her.
