Description	:	Bertha Louise Korgan was born December 27, 1880. She was the daughter of Wilhelm (William) Korgan and Maria (Mary) Rodner Korgan. Growing up in a home with parents who only spoke German, Bertha could not speak English well when she started to attend a rural school, District 50, near Trumbull in Clay County, Nebraska. She was the daughter of Wilhelm (William) Korgan and Maria (Mary) Rodner Korgan. Growing up in a home with parents who only spoke German, Bertha could not speak English well when she started to attend a rural school, District 50, near Trumbull in Clay County, Nebraska. She was eager to learn, though, and did very well. Bertha finished the eighth grade at the age of 14. Bertha married William Strong September 3, 1898. William was a widower and had two small children. Together, Bertha and William had ten more children - Clarence (1901), Mabel (1905), Alice (1906), Edward (1908), Robert (1910), Elwood (1912), Earl (1914), Marie (1916), Amy (1919), Richard (1922) Church was very important to Bertha. Her family had been charter members of the First Evangelical Church which was northwest of Harvard. The family attended the Salem Baptist Church south of Giltner. When this church closed, they attended the Methodist Church in Trumbull. The Strong home was a neighborhood gathering place for the children from the homes of the Blacks, Hays, Britton, Siefken and Herzog families among others. Many exciting games of Rook, Pit, Checkers and other types of family games were played in the living room. When the boys got too noisy, Bertha sent them to the corn crib loft or the haymow in the barn where the games continued - often until chore time. In her later years, Bertha's health was failing. Bertha spent some time in Scotts Bluff County in western Nebraska where the climate helped her to feel better. In 1936, Bertha and William were back in Trumbull, living on their farm. Bertha Strong died July 8, 1936 at the age of 55.
