A call of the Death Angel at the H.J. Blanchaine home Monday night, took Mrs. Blanchaine to her final rest at 11:45 p.m. She had been in failing health for the past two years and many times the end had seemed very near. But after each attack she rallied and even in her last illness, during which she was confined to her bed the greater part of nine months, she was very hopeful of a complete recovery. In her long sickness she never complained of her suffering and was always very appreciative of all that was done to maker her more comfortable. Last week on Wednesday morning she became unconscious and from that time lay perfectly quiet until she fell into her last sleep. Mame Connell, only child of John Connell and the late Ellen Booth Connell, was born in La Porte City on December 31st, 1881. She grew to young womanhood here and completed her high school course with the class of 1901. Early in life she developed unusual talent in music and her parents provided training for her in her chosen line of work. She assisted in a local music store for several years after leaving school, and was always ready and willing to give her time and talent in public programs. For man years she sang in a girls quartette, other member of which were Vera McQuilkin, the late Maude Lizer and Mattie Snow (Sisson). For a short time she and her parents lived in Waterloo. In 1941 the Connell family moved from that place to Fort Dodge to reside. There the deceased was employed in a music store where her ability to sing and play the piano made her a valued employe. Later she had a clerical position with the Gas and Electric Company in that city. Her mother died on August 11th, 1928, and from that time she kept up the home and looked after her father. On September 29th, 1930, she became the wife of Henry J. Blanchaine of this place and they established their home here. She was a member of the Presbyterian church and filled offices in the ladies’ societies, and also belonged to the Pythian Sisters and the Literary Circle. Although she lacked the physical strength to do as she wished she maintained her interest in the home her friends and public affairs to within a few days of her death. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon in the Blanchaine home at two o’clock and was conducted by Rev. C.D. James, pastor of the M.E. church. Mrs. F.E. Lehman and W.D. Lyle sang two appropriate selections, “The Valley of Peace” and “Waiting for Me”, and were accompanied by Miss Lillian Garrabrant. The casket bearers were W.H. Gahr, H.G. Esher, C.A. Brust, Roy E. Ashley, E.L. Esher, and t.J. Miller of Waterloo. Interment was made in West View cemetery by the grave of her mother. The numerous beautiful floral tributes which banked the casket were mute witnesses of the love and esteem held for the departed.
