Lillian Anderson, his grandaughter, for the book "Hamlin County: 1878-1979" published in 1979. Bertel Andersen Family Bertel Andersen, his wife Elsa, and their three children left their birthplace, Kolding, Denmark, immigrated to America to establish their new home in Hamlin County, S. Dak., during the early summer of 1882. The homestead land is in the northeastern area of Norden Township. It is identified on homestead certificate #7090, with the United States grantor; and Bertel A. Karnsdal, grantee. The initial A identified the surname Anderson, and Karnsdal identifies his home in Kolding Denmark. The grant was for Lots one, two, three and five, and the SE 1/4 of NW 1/4 of Section 4, Range 52, Township 113, consisting of 153.30 acres. The use of lots description is because the land borders Florence Township on the north while lots one, two and five are on the curved shore of Dry Lake, extending approximately three-fourths of a mile in length. In 1882, their first homesite, was established on adjacent government land south of the homestead plat, consisted of a dugout for the family and facilities for livestock on the north side of a hill located near the Dry Lake shore, a creek and a flowing spring. The second Anderson homesite, consisting of a sod house and shelter for livestock, was located midway within the western border of the homestead plat. Later a frame home was built on the site that became the family home. Bertel Anderson, born in Dec. 1828, served in the Danish Army in 1848-1849. He was awarded-a medal of recognition and an annual Veterans Honorary Donation of 100 crowns that he received annually from 1850 through the year of 1915 prior to his death on Dec. 26, 1916. Records show his surname spelled as Andersen. Elsa, was born in 1838 in Kolding. Denmark. After their marriage, they lived on the Karnsdal place where Soren was born on April 21, 1870, Peter was born on Nov. 25, 1873 and Emma was born on April 18, 1878. The children were confirmed in the East Norden Lutheran Church and became members of the congregation. Elsa Anderson passed away during 1894. [Age 56] During the 1890s, Bertel acquired the land adjacent, identified as parts of Section 4, Township 113, Range 52, in a total of approximately 300 acres, the remainder of the land located in Section 4, part of which borders one-half mile of the west shore of Dry Lake. Soren Anderson and Ida Junso were married and lived in the family home and participated in the family farming operation. Their only child, a daughter, Emma Christine, was born on April 15, 1897. Bertel Anderson continued to live in the family home with his son Soren and family. Emma married William Kallioinen on April 16, 1915 and they lived nearby after their marriage. (See Kallioinen story). Soren Anderson passed away on Sept. 21, 1916 after a brief illness. He was buried in the East Norden Lutheran Church Cemetery. Peter (See Peter Anderson story) Emma married Sever J. Wattnem. (See Wattnem story) Bertel Anderson died on Dec. 26, 1916 and is buried beside his wife, Elsa. After Soren died Emma and William Kallioinen and their infant son, Soren, returned to the family home to join Soren Anderson's widow, Ida and Bertel Anderson until Bertel's death. They acquired, by inheritance, the original homestead site and the adjacent west half of the NW1/4 of section 4. Emma and William Kallioinen maintained the family farm, constructed the present farm home and additional farm buildings. In 1926, they moved with their family to Detroit, Mich. From 1926 until 1965, the Bertel Anderson homestead was owned by non-family members. In 1965, Jane Lillian Anderson, a daughter of Peter and Amanda Anderson, and a granddaughter of Bertel, acquired the land. In 1970, Ernest Anderson and his wife Maryan purchased lots three, four and five and the S1/4 of NW1/4, Section 4, Norden Township from Jane Lillian who retained Lots one and two where she maintains a family vacation home. 97 years after Bertel Anderson filed his homestead, the site is presently owned by two of his grandchildren.
