Read More	Written by her daughter Bertha: "EMMA ANDERSON Mrs. Emma Wattnem, a pioneer woman came to America by ship in 1882, when she was four years old with her father Bertil[sic] Anderson and her mother Elsa C. Anderson, two brothers Soren and Peter Anderson who were older. They came by way of New York and Grandpa Anderson homesteaded on a claim in Hamlin Co., just west of Dry Lake. At first they lived in a dug out, as the pioneers called them with dirt floors. While living in the dug out, a sod house was being built. This house was one-story consisting of three bedrooms, a living room, dining room and kitchen. My mother was blind when she first came to America. But her eye sight was restored after an operation was performed. At first the pioneer children attended school in various neighboring homes. But by the time my mother attended school, there was a one-room school house built almost four miles from her home. Dry Lake runs into Lake Poinsett from the north or anyway it used to. But in pioneer days Dry Lake was actually dry and my mother would tell of grass that grew as tall as a house in the lake bottom. There were no fences in those early days, so my mother had to herd the cattle. This was when she was eight years old. The following year, when she was nine, her father bought a pony for her which made herding cattle much easier. Because the grass was so tall she would have to go on a hill and look down until she'd see them. She would have to keep them from other ranchers' cattle. These ranchers' cattle used to run in large herds. My grandmother died when my mother was 16. Then my mother was left with all the work. She had to keep house for her father and brothers, milk the cows, she'd then picket the cows, and she'd have to drive a horse and buggy to Estelline, S.D., which was 14 miles with the cream and eggs and be back with groceries and have dinner ready by noon. There were no washing machines in those early days - not even a wash board. I'm not sure that there was even yeast for bread baking. In the early days my Uncle Soren used to fish - this was their source of meat - before they had chickens. Grandpa Anderson was married twice in Denmark. Our Grandma Anderson was his second wife. Her name was Elsa. Catarina Anderson was a daughter by his first marriage. She was born in 1860 and died in 1886. She married a Karr (or Kjar). Her daughter Lena H. Karr was born July 23, 1882, and died April 8, 1908. I think Lena Karr may have come with her mother as an infant when the Andersons came. I never heard if Karr came to America, if he died in Denmark or what. But Lena Karr made her home with the Andersons. And that's how it happens that she's buried on the Anderson lot - right out in front." * * * Emma Johanna Cecilia was Lutheran and died of heart disease. * * * Emma apparently inspired her daughters to write about their family history. Bertha wrote two short stories about Emma: "Emma Anderson" (a one-page, typed document) and "A Pioneer Woman – A Short Story about the life of Mrs. Sever J. Wattnem" (a three-page, typed document in 1976.) Sarah created typed records of family members names, birth/death dates, and marriages. She also wrote three stories about Emma and Sever Wattnem the later two being published in the books "Historical Collections of Deuel County" copyright in 1977 and "Hamlin County: 1878-1979" copyright 1979. Hazel wrote two typed documents titled "The Wattnem Family" and "The Anderson Family".
