The entire casket was banked with beautiful floral offerings expressive of the high esteem in which the deceased was held in the community. Members of the local Masonic lodge attended the service in a body. Commital was in the Nevada cemetery. The casket bearers were Abner Harlow, John Hattery, O. R. Solem, Harold Tipton and H. E. Wright. Bert S. Dickey was born at Hazelgreen, Ia., Nov 3, 1870, a son of Charles H. and Mertie Sherman Dickey and had been a resident of Story County for 50 years. Longtime Nevada business man, he had retired after selling the Deola Milling Co., July 1, 1954. He was united in marriage Sept. 14, 1893, to Belle Miller in Slater, Iowa who preceded him in death in 1944. Mr. Dickey was a member of the Nevada Methodist church, and of the Nevada Masonic Lodge and the Eastern Star. He had served on the City Council for a number of years and had held other offices of civic trust during his long residence in Nevada. Three sons survive the father, Lyle M. Dickey of Des Moines, Charles Harold Dickey of Long Beach, Calif. and Byron F. Dickey of Des Moines. He leaves two grandchildren, Mrs. Ted Klein and Claude George Dickey, both of Des Moines. Also surviving are one brother, Dr. C. G. Dickey of Long Beach, Calif., and one sister, Mrs. Mabel Dewell of Muskogee, Okla. One son, Glen Dickey, died in 1937. The last rites were largely attended by relatives and friends. From Nevada Evening Journal July 28, 1951 (page 1) Around the Town With NELL Bert Dickey, Nearing 81, One of the "Boys" At His Deola Milling Plant For thirty-seven years B. S. (Bert) Dickey, has owned and operated the Deola Milling Compan which is located on the Rock Island right-of-way, and despite the fact that he by-passed the three-score-years and ten a decade ago, he never misses a day to down at the mill and on the job. It may be that because he has had the help of the "Wright Brothers" -- Hiram (Pete) for nearly 31 years, and Homer since 1936 -- that he retains his buoyant step and his pleasant outlook on life, despite that fact that since the death of his wife, February, 1944, there must be many times a great loneliness in his heart. Born Nov. 3, 1870, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Dickey at Hazel Green, Iowa, where his grandfather and eight sons had settled, years before, the family moved later to Corning where they engaged in agriculture. They moved to Maxwell in 1882 where C. H. Dickey operated a general merchandise store. Nevada In 1905 After Bert's marriage at the home of his bride in Slater, Mr. and Mrs. Dickey lived in Maxwell. The Dickeys who traded their business in Maxwell for 800 acres of Missouri land went to Missouri in 1902 but returned to Story county, this time to Nevada in 1905. They were first engaged in the implement business in Nevada, then the house furnishings, where the McGrath Furniture store is now located. Bert was in business with his brother-in-law, Edgar Dewell, the firm name being Dewell & Dickey, and after C. E. Morfoot of Perry joined them as mortician they added the undertaking business. When Dewell left the firm to go to Muskogee, Okla., Mr. Morfoot purchased his interest. In 1914 Mr. Dickey sold out to Mr. Morfoot and bought a half interest in the Deola Milling company May 14, 1914, forming a partnership with William White which continued until 1921 when he assumed full ownership. When Mr. Dickey bought in with William White, the Deola Milling company was housed in the building which has been moved from West E avenue and had originally been known as the "Thrasher Mill". This large building has for some time been used by Mr. Dickey as a storehouse, the offices and mill being located in his building to the east, which, at one time had been the McElroy cement fence-post factory. The old mill was operated for several years by a steam engine which had been attached to the south side of the building. Although now used as a warehouse by Mr. Dickey, and lacking old equipment, the former Old Thrasher Mill is still occupying a definite position in the Deola milling Company business. Its huge joists and sills are still intact. Moved In 1913 The moving of this big building back in 1913, took more than two carloads of material: planks, blocks, capstans and other equipment. According to an article in the Nevada Journal of 1913 the moving by Wm. White of the large building from out on West E to its present site, was quite an event. The newspaper account of the moving is interesting history: "The contact for moving the mill was let by Mr. White, to a man from Randall, and there the fun began--as there was not bridge across West Indian, it was necessary to ford it. "Horses were used to move the building, which was very heavy, particularly with all the milling machinery inside. Capstans were used extensively with the horses gradually taking up the slack. "Bad weather hampered operations and instead of taking a week to move it, almost a month passed by before the structure had been moved. At one time workers even considered dismantling it and moving the building in sections. Planking the mill on six or seven inch hardwood rollers was indeed slow. Trouble Along Way "The trouble of moving the old mill from its original location to its location on the right-of-way of the Rock Island, was many and varied" states the 1913 Nevada Journal. Halted once by a single branch of a box-elder tree, it was within a stone's throw of its foundation, when it was halted by the Rock Island until Mr. White straightened out his permit with the Rock Island officials. J. A. McDaniel of Nevada helped lay the brick used in the foundation which was in readiness for the mill." In the present mill, which is to the east of the Old Mill, Mr. Dickey has up-to-date machinery for the Deola Milling Company business which is largely that of grinding, mixing and hulling of feed for poultry and livestock. There is a great deal of custom mixing done for farmers having their own formula. Then there is the mixing of ingredients for their own formula. The hulling is done for farmers bringing in their oats to have hulled in order to fee them (sans hulls) to little pigs. The mixing of the feeds for poultry and livestock on the scale done at the Deola Milling company, necessitates keeping on hand a large stock of ingredients such as middlings, tankage, meat scraps, linseed meal, soybean meal, alfalfa meal, cod liver oil, fish meal, celacto (the live germ in buttermilk), etc. Despite the coming eighty first birthday, Mr. Dickey can swing a hundred pound of feed into a truck with the agility of a younger man. When business is brisk all hands are at work down at Deola Milling Co. but when there is a lull, the "Boss", Pete and Homer may take a breather--and occasionally even listen to a ball game. Could be those are th things which have helped to keep him young. Although Bert S. Dickey has certainly had a busy life, he took time during his earlier years in Nevada to assume the responsibilities as a citizen. He served on the city council during the time the first pavement was laid in Nevada and during the digging of the deep well. He is a member of the Masonic lodge and of the Nevada Methodist church. Dickey Family Of the four sons born to Mr. and Mrs. Dickey, one son, Glenn died several years ago. Lyle, chief printer for Koch Brothers, and Byron, who was Story county auditor for 16 years, now with the Pioneer Lumber Company, both live in Des Moines, and Harold of Berkeley, Calif., who was 16 years in Washington, D. C. is Chief Officer in the Maritime department, one of his important duties being the outfitting of ships. Mr. Dickey sr. has two grandchildren, Carole, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Dickey and Claude, son of Mr. and Mrs. Byron Dickey. Bert S. Dickey, who has been owner and operator of the Deola Mills, for more than a third of century, remembers when he used to deliver a ton of cornmeal weekly to Tom Matheny, J. H. Burroughs and other Nevada grocers and when the selling of flour, was a major part of the Deola Milling Company business. "Flour is now purchased in fine and ten pound sacks and cornmeal has ceased to be an artile of diet since "mush" and 'Johnny-cake' went out of style", he says regretfully. "Do you know what flour is purchased for now?" asked this man who has been in the milling business for 37 years. "For making pies and cakes" I hazarded. "Pies and cakes nothing -- the present day homemaker buys 'piecrust mix' and 'cake mix' for such things. No, the only use the lady of the house has for flour, nowadays, is to make gravy," said Mr. Dickey." "Not that I have anything against gravy when it is made right" he said. We agreed with him there has been a drastic change in home technique since the time the staff of life was set as a 'sponge' the night before, mixed down two or three times the next forenoon and when molded into loaves and baked in the range oven--was mouth watering, the golden brown loaves made when set out to cool on the large bread board. A check was made with local grocery stores to see if all this about flour is true--and sure enough, one merchant said that a salesman had been in his store yesterday and said that the sale of the two-pound packages of flour (apartment-size) is at an all time high, and that the sale of packaged 'mixes' is on the increase. "I remember only 15 years ago when I first came to Nevada, it was not unusual to sell a farmer fifteen - 48 lb. sacks of flour at a time," stated this grocer. Mr. Dickey repeats that experience. He says that it was not uncommon when he started in the flour and feed business to have farmers come in Saturday nights and load their sleighs with 15 or 20 sacks of flour during the days before "mixes", commercial baking, rolls ready for the oven, and deep freezes filled with pies, cakes, and eight or nine loaves of bread, bought in each week in town were in fashion.
