CHESTER, Neb., April 20. - (Special.) - Bessie Davenport, between eleven and twelve years of age, died here last night from the effects of confluent smallpox. She has been sick about three weeks, but owing to a weak constitution was not able to stand the ravages of the disease and died from the cause. This family has been terribly afflicted. On March 24 her mother was quarantined for smallpox and at this time is not able to turn herself in bed, owing to large sores which are breaking out upon various parts of her body. The father, married sister and husband have all been afflicted, the sister being terribly postulated. The deceased was buried last night by friends who have but recently recovered from the disease. This is the worst case that has been known in these parts, a number of others being light, are rapidly recovering. =============================================== Chester Herald (Chester, NE), Friday, April 26, 1901; pg. 1 Bessie Davenport is dead. After three weeks of suffering and fighting against the fates she passed away at 5:30 o'clock Friday evening, April 19, 1901. When the fatal disease fastened its death like grip upon her young form she was in no condition to withstand the ordeal, having previously been under the doctor's care, and the sickness which terminated her life was fatal and terrible. At the time of her demise she was 11 years, 8 months and 18 days of age. The flower of the family, the ride of a mother's heart, and the father's idolized darling. The blow came sad and sudden, and while, in part, was expected, it was no less severe. She was buried the same night at 10:00 o'clock, in the Chester cemetery (sic), loving hands assisting in laying away the little form. We can say no more. Our heart is bowed down. The heart of every person in this town is stricken at the announcement of this death and we pray God that no more of like measure may be meted out to us. This family has been, of late, severely stricken. Since March 24 they have all be confined to the house with a terrible malady. Father, mother, two daughters and a son-in-law have tasted alike the bitter fruits of the most dreaded disease that has yet infested our border. Bravely have they borne up under the terrible conflict, and honestly have they kept their trust by remaining within the confines of their own portal, watching the form of their darling as it was borne out into the night never to re-appear until that day when the grave shall give up its dead and we shall all stand before the King in that land where sickness and sorrow is not known and death never comes. While this grief-stricken family feel grateful to the friends who have assisted them in this, their great affliction, these friends, in return, are glad that they were privileged to "cast their bread" unto this afflicted family in this, their greatest hour of need. The HERALD'S most earnest prayer is that they may have a rich taste of heavenly grace to enable them to bear up under this terrible ordeal, and that's God's hand may be restrained from falling again upon us in like manner. ================================================ The Benedict Herald (Benedict, NE), Friday, April 26, 1901; pg. 5 C. F. Baughan received the sad news last Friday evening, of the death of his niece, Miss Bessie Davenport, at Chester Nebr., who died that afternoon of smallpox and was buried the same evening. Mrs. Davenport is just recovering from the disease and Mr. Davenport came down with it only a few days before Bessie died. Their daughter and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Summers live in the same house with Mr. and Mrs. Davenport and are both down with the dread disease. Mr. Summers is a brother of Mrs. W. E. Muth and Miss Myrtle Summers of this place, and both families are former residents of Benedict.
