Description	:	DAYTON — Bessie M. Norstrum passed away on Sunday, March 25, 2007, at Tompkins Memorial Health Center in Fort Dodge at the age of 96. Bessie was born to Rena and Charles W. Norstrum on a farm south of Dayton, Iowa, in Burnside Township on December 13, 1910. She graduated with the Burnside High School class of 1928 and attended Presbyterian Nursing School in Chicago, graduating in 1932. She did private nursing and blood bank work until joining the Air Corp in WWII. She changed her enrollment to Army Nursing Corp as she wanted to go overseas. Her wish was fulfilled... Read More	DAYTON — Bessie M. Norstrum passed away on Sunday, March 25, 2007, at Tompkins Memorial Health Center in Fort Dodge at the age of 96. Bessie was born to Rena and Charles W. Norstrum on a farm south of Dayton, Iowa, in Burnside Township on December 13, 1910. She graduated with the Burnside High School class of 1928 and attended Presbyterian Nursing School in Chicago, graduating in 1932. She did private nursing and blood bank work until joining the Air Corp in WWII. She changed her enrollment to Army Nursing Corp as she wanted to go overseas. Her wish was fulfilled as she served 18 months on Saipan. She cared for many injured in the Pacific Campaign. In her letters home, she was thrilled to have flown and was amazed the trip only took 28 hours. She is a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 210 in Danville, Illinois. After the war she assumed a career nursing at the Veterans Hospital in Danville, Illinois. She transferred to the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines a few years before her retirement to be closer to her parents in their later years. She cared for her parents in Dayton until their deaths. She was preceded in death by her sister, Frances (John) Spalding and a brother, Lloyd W. Norstrum. She is survived by her nephew, Robert Norstrum of Des Moines, Iowa; her nieces, Maxine (Al) Meyer of Lake Arthur, Louisiana, and Charlotte (Wm.) Zilm of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, as well as six great nieces and nephews and ten great-great nieces and nephews. Bessie had an adventurous spirit. She was supportive of all young people. She was especially fond of animals and appreciated all growing things. She will be deeply missed by her family. She was an integral part of their growing years and adult life. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, March 28, 2007, at Carson Funeral Home in Dayton. Burial will be in the Dayton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in her memory to the Dayton Library or to the serviceman's charity of your choice.
