Bessie graduated from Julian HS in 1932. She worked a year for the Scripps family before she married Melvin Olson in 1933. She and Mel shared 50 yrs of married life and had a son, Oril Olson, born in 1935. She wrote many colorful stories of her life in Encanto. She boarded State college students, had her garden and raised chickens. She drove for Yellow Cab Taxi for three years in the early 40s, taking home many Sailors and Marines on Liberty to have dinner and an evening of company. Many are still corresponding with her. She worked at Ryan Aeronautical and retired in 1977. She and Melvin traveled into the desert and mountain areas for years as a Gem and Mineral Society member in which she held many different offices and positions, including teaching at the Balboa Spanish Village building. They traveled the states in their camper and motor home. After Melvin's passing in 1984, Bessie traveled the states and Europe visiting all her cousins and followed the family history to England and Sweden. She is survived by brother, Oscar Pike of Ramona; sisters, Lois Pike Fenley of AZ and Dorothy Pike Maurath of Grass Valley, CA; daughter-in-law, Joan Olson of Point Loma, CA; 5 grandchildren; her caregiver niece, Pat Pike of San Diego; and a number of other nieces and nephews. Her family will say goodbye on Jan 23, 2010, at the Pike former home at 1020 D St, Ramona. Interment will be with her parents, Harold and Lillian Pike, in the Ramona Cemetery.
