She was born to Thequata (Bowman) and Joe Uhlig on August 14, 1926, in Falls City. She was one of three children in the family. Read More	EDGECOMBE, BETTE LEE—Bette Lee Edgecombe, 87, of Geneva, died at her home on Thursday, December 12, 2013, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born to Thequata (Bowman) and Joe Uhlig on August 14, 1926, in Falls City. She was one of three children in the family. The Unligs moved to Geneva in 1940, where Bette attended Geneva High School Bette married John Edgecombe on March 29, 1943. After John left for the Army Air Force, Bette went to Lincoln and attended the Midwest Beauty Academy, graduating in 1944. Upon John’s return from military service, John and Bette made their home in Geneva, where their three children, John Jr., Joe, and Jan were born. In 1965, Carlos Zenteno, an AFS student from Chile, joined their family, a relationship that continues today. John had joined his parents in the family business, The Nebraska Signal, and Bette was a willing volunteer at the office, spending much of her time helping wherever she was asked. John and Bette expanded their business in 1977, when they purchased Service Press in Henderson. Bette felt a tremendous sense of pride in their family businesses, and took great pleasure in the associations and friendships she made over the years. Bette was a member of the Red Hatters Club, the Mac Computer Club, and a 50-plus year member of the United Methodist Church of Geneva and the Order of Eastern Star. After John’s retirement, he and Bette became permanent residents of Florida. They enjoyed all that Florida had to offer and especially enjoyed playing hosts and tour guides. John and Bette enjoyed 52 years of marriage before John’s passing in 1995. After John’s death, she continued to spend most of her time in Florida. She loved to travel, and also loved hosting family and friends, from all over the world. In 2011, Bette made the decision to return to Nebraska, and Geneva once again became her permanent home. Bette lived every moment of every day to the fullest. She made a friend wherever she went, with her fun and witty sense of humor. Bette faced all of life’s challenges with courage and dignity. Her positive attitude and fighting spirit were an inspiration to all of those around her. Bette is preceded in death by her husband, John; parents, Thequata and Joe Uhlig, and an infant brother, Joseph; parents-in-law, Gladys and Tyler Edgecombe. She is survived by sons, John Edgecombe Jr.(Jo Ann); Joe Edgecombe (Judy); Carlos Zenteno; daughter, Jann Edgecombe (Glen Capek); grandchildren, Jim (Michelle) Edgecombe; Lisa Hopwood; Joe Edgecombe Jr. (Rick Nelson); Tyler (Cindi) Edgecombe; Christopher Edgecombe; MariBeth Ziegenbein(Austin); JuliAnna Capek; great-grandchildren, Lauren and Shaun Edgecombe, Grant and Ben Edgecombe, Jordan Hopwood, Sidney Bishop, Brady Hopwood, Cooper, Tucker and Peyton Edgecombe; Mason and Miley Edgecombe; brother, Bob Uhlig (Darlene); nieces and nephews; special friends, Barb and Rich Koehlmoos and Mabel Stansbury; and a host of friends. A funeral service was held December 22 at the United Methodist Church in Geneva with Kim Dunker officiating. Pianist Karen Jefferson accompanied the congregational hymn, “O Come All Ye Faithful” and soloist Lauren Jo Edgecombe, who sang “Silent Night.” Private committal of cremains was held in the Geneva Public Cemetery in Geneva.
